If you are a member of The Fortress Of Solitude, I'd like to think you have a way of thinking differently from the common herd among us. The latest reality pop star to shoot to number one in the charts may have the lolly-gaggers hooting and hollering, but it leaves you cold and angry. The likes of, say, Pearl Harbour and Armageddon may have knuckle draggers the world over uniting in cinematic ecstasy, but to you, cynical and hardened, it leaves you desperate to find the off button. So it goes then, that whatever the majority have panned over the years, you've learned to love. Movies that tanked or are universally thought of as awful are some of your most treasured DVD's. Well, this is the part of The Fortress where YOU get to defend their honour and try and spread the good word. So, maybe you thought Speed 2 was a masterpiece. Maybe you thought Critters 3: Critters In Space was a Star Wars beater. This is where you get your say. I'll start the ball rolling with this slice of Japanese nonsense: Godzilla vs Megalon. Now, for those not in the know, GvM is probably the most hated of the Godzilla movies, with the obvious exception of the US Remake (or GINO - Godzilla In Name Only, as the fans would call it). It's certainly the most cartoonish, childish imagining of the Big G, and it's more like watching Monster Wrestling at times, as Godzilla teams up with the giant Ultraman clone, Jet Jaguar, to square off against two supershit monsters, Megalon and Gigan. As someone from the IMDB said, it's "probably the best worst movie ever made." Godzilla himself is totally different from previous movies. He punches his fists together when he gets ready to fight, he throws his arms up to cheer and he's basically a giant, goofy, loveable hero. Hell, even his face is cute. And then of course, the infamous "flying dropkick", where Godzilla would sail across the ground on his tail and kick Megalon. Hell, words don't do it justice. Check THIS out.. gojistomp.org/quicktime/gojikick.movIf that doesn't save a movie, nothing will. The human storyline is stupid but more interesting than some other Big G movies, and it's basically a beyond dumb slice of hokum that really needs to be seen to be believed. Awful and brilliant all at the same time. I have some more candidates, but I'll give the floor to someone else in the meantime. This is your chance to praise the unpraised...

I'd like to start by saying this: I couldn't agree more with The Curmudgeon when he said Pearl Harbor leaves me cold and angry. Cool special effects, but I definitely prefer the older film Tora Tora Tora, which was much more accurate and well put together.
My first underrated movie choice would be Gettysburg, from 1993. Often overlooked by the likes of Glory, the completely awful Gods and Generals, and the newer Cold Mountain, Gettysburg only brought in 11 million at the box office, and it is just now becoming more popular 13 years later. Filled with good acting and action, it really sickens me to see the likes of (here's a good example) Stealth bring in 73 million at the box office, plus a whole load of DVD sales.
My second underrated DVD choice is (trying to find a newer example) Cellular. Not a five star film, but it only brought in 32 million at the box office, and when you compare that to something like the godawful Kill Bill Vol. 2, which made 131 million, it makes you want to cry. Cellular has its problems, and I really don't like WIlliam H. Macy that much, but it has a believable plot without a lot of holes, and it also does a good job keeping the viewer's interest.
Curmudgeon- Does this subject also include unerrated Cds?

Hey man - you know the score. ANYTHING goes in The Fortress. You want to talk about under-rated CDs then be my guest. I could think of a fair few of them as well, but my part has been said for now, I shall let others talk first.

All right, cds it is then. I'll try to restrain myself and choose only three underrated masterpieces.
1. Diamond Head's Behold the Beginning. True, most people that discover Diamond Head love them, but not too many people have ever heard of them. Behold the Beginning is a shortened version of their debut, Lightning to the Nations, with most of the biggest hits and two or three new tracks. This is one of the only bands I've listened to that can write melodic songs and still be considered metal.
2. Metallica's Saint Anger. Only a three star album, but everywhere you look people are pulling their hair out with frustration at this album. It has its problems (and there are some pretty big ones), but what most people fail to see are the four or five standout tracks, the best of which is The Unnamed Feeling.
3. Def Leppard's Pyrromania. Yes, it's hard to say this album is underrated, but it is often overlooked due to the insanely popular Hysteria (over 17 million sold). I like Pyromania better myself, it has more of metal sound and it's not flooding the radio like Hysteria.

Hmmm, I've never been into Metallica. I dunno why, I must have missed the boat or something, but I just find his voice and that ultra macho, manly rock shtick to be dull.
Under-rated albums, though? Well, Prince's 90's work has been criminally ignored. The Gold Experience, Come and Emancipation are SUPERB, but they'll never be acknowledged as such, just talked about as "being in the wilderness".

The Curmudgeon,
Ahhhhh, the sound of Prince in the 90's. I must admit that I missed out on all of the albums you mentioned upon their initial release...yes, a crime against all who are followers of Prince. What can I say, I had alot going on in my life then and all my music interests took a back seat for awhile.
However, I have picked up these while living here in Finland and I must say the albums are probably THE BEST that just slipped in under the radar. Prince knows what he wants and how to get it.
As for movies, I think that DUMB & DUMBER stands as highly underrated. Most people choose to remember the "potty humor" aspect. Like a fine wine, it's the only Farrelly Bros. movie that has aged well with time. It seems impossible, but I laugh harder ever time I see it. Nothing about it has ever gotten stale. EVER.

I forgot to mention, the Farrelly Bros. have been quoted as saying that "Dumb & Dumber is our Gone With The Wind." From what I've seen, I believe them!

There was a cheapo TV movie of Nick Fury a few years back starring your friend and mine, David Hasselhoff. It got slated into the ground; for the effects, for the script, for the acting..
But I really enjoyed it. For it's modest budget you can tell that they really TRIED (Hell, they have the Hellicarrier, something I sure didn't expect), and whilst The Hoff doesn't convince for one second as Fury - Hell, it's The Hoff. The guy's a legend and can do no wrong, dammit.
Plus, the plot had some pretty indepth nods to the original comic books, and when you compare it to mega budget junk like Catwoman (which DID make it to the cinema but didn't have one single comic book reference) it makes you appreciate it all the more.
It's on the likes of the Sci-Fi channel all the time, and it's well worth checking out.

Hi.
I got to see the first ten minutes of that epic NICK FURY with ol' David "Micheal Knight" Hasselhoff. Oh, the scenery was quite chewed for sure )...but I was enjoying the hell out of it. Then I needed to go somewhere with the wife. My wife decided to program her show...using the tape I had that epic on and...10 minutes was all I saw.
Sad, ain't it?

The Curmudgeon,
Yes...it is. Have you noticed the article on Ain't It Cool News where they mention they're making IRON MAN and NICK FURY? No Hoff in sight, though...
It'll suck....

There was supposed to be an Iron Man movie coming out this year, but it got cancelled. Shame, because they had everything under way (Hell, even had promo stands in cinemas..) www.efavata.com/CBM/images/IronMan_2005.jpgBut alas, not to be..

Ugh, "Saint Anger", make it go away. Any Metallica past "The Black Album" must be wiped from my memory, but to each their own. I mean, I listen to Mr. Bungle for crying out loud. It's a well-documented fact that I love all things Godzilla (minus "Godzilla's Revenge" and the american remake, naturally) and "Megalon" is just one hell of a weird, cheesy trip; watched that one so many times I may be brain-damaged. Other cinematic and musical atocities that I've enjoyed include "Josie and the Pussycats", Disturbed, "Mars Attacks", "Tank Girl", Hootie and the Blowfish, Shakira, "Elektra", and bizarre Japanese pop-punk girl group, Shonen Knife.
