Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to day 2 of Dual Songs of the day! Well, once again we find ourselves with Prince. This song was originally recorded in 1982, but reworked for AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY to garner a more “international” sound.

Typical of Prince, it concerns the first encounter of two individuals after he spies her walking “in through the ‘OUT’ door....OUT DOOR.” The video for the song was only shot after AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY failed to sell as well as prior Prince albums and thus lifting Prince’s short-lived, self-imposed ban of “no more videos.” Untypically Prince, the video actual extends the length of the song with a funky intro. Watch how the man himself gets everyone to movin’ and groovin’ before beginning to spellbind with his magical tale of love...

Moving right along, this song is the title track off of Prince’s DIRTY MIND album. Unlike RASPBERRY BERET, this song concerns itself with a boy who wants to take a relationship further because of how "dirty" his mind gets whenever she's around him. The song is built around a keyboard riff created by Doctor Fink, which dominates the song. The demo-like song lacks a chorus, and is a stark departure of the smooth R&B sound of Prince's first two albums. The video also captures a raw feel, and considering the timeframe of the early ‘80’s, was quite risky given the nature of Prince’s outfit…or lack thereof. Despite this, the man knows his steps and not only moves the audience but shakes it hard enough to have your eardrums rattle around for your brain to easily take notice...

Prince is slippin'. There are videos of his on the internet! Raspberry Beret is actually one of my favorite 80's songs. That violin riff is just so irresistible and integrated so artfully into the structure of the song. That kind of talent drives me nuts.

You know, I always try and keep the Prince threads and discussions to a minimum in here, so as to avoid alienating any of the other Dwellers on here that don't happen to clutch at their hearts and sigh when they see him on TV. So it's always nice to see Prince threads NOT started by me.

That version of Raspberry Beret was actually only officially released on CD last year, as a second disc of extended 12" (I don't buy vinyl) mixes, and I was as giddy as a schoolgirl when I got it. Mrs C bought it for me, and I was like, "oh, AWESOME! This has got the version of Raspberry Beret with the extended intro where Prince coughs at the start!" I'm not sure if the look she gave me was pity or fear.

Dirty Mind is one of the Prince albums that I own but rarely listen to. Dunno why, but there's just nothing there that grips me. "Before My Time" could be argued, but then the very next year's Controversy album remains one of my favourites. Maybe it's the "Sister" song that keeps me away..
