I don't know about you guys, but when we in the States went to see "Transformers" we were confronted with this vision of awesomeness: youtube.com/watch?v=dOsLD_KlQrw No title, just a date: 1-18-08, and yes, that was the Statue of Liberty's head flying down the street. The theater lit up with "what WAS that"s and "THAT WAS AWESOME!"s and most of all with "what is it called?". Well, a few weeks later, the buzz has only increased. It's Voltron! No, it's a Lost spin-off! It's Godzilla! Rumors have flown all over the place. All we know is that it's code-named "Project Cloverfield", "Lost" creator JJ Abrams is directing, and he has gone on record as saying that America needs it's own Godzilla. Strong words, he'd better be able to back them up, says I.

Ahhh, glad you brought this up, Trashy. I too saw this trailer during Transformers and it left me saucer-eyed.
In the age of the internet though, I doubt any secrets the film-makers have will be kept secret for long. But the idea of a US-style Godzilla, written by Lost scribe JJ, is A-OK with me.

Thought I'd update with the new trailer showing before "Beowulf". Enjoy. youtube.com/watch?v=FnTyhJX5Rp0 So yeah, it's official: "Cloverfield" is the title and Abrams is producing.

Man, that is just everything a trailer SHOULD be for a movie like that. Tells you everything you need to know but gives absolutely nothing away and has you desperate to learn the answers.
Compare with the "show pretty much everything" trailer of King Kong (was anyone else sick of seeing his big face, on trailers, posters, magazines etc before the film was even out?)
This really could be something special.

You know, part of me really wishes this WAS Godzilla. The big guy deserves a DECENT movie that attracts main stream attention. Another new monster is cool and all, but.. I dunno.. how amazing would it be if all this buzz was over Godzilla?

I'm sure Toho are paying full attention to how this movie does with the public and at the box office, namely in Japan. If this turns out to be a hit, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Big Guy return in a similar style of a movie in the not too far off future.

So I take you don't buy the whole "Last Godzilla Movie - Ever" shtick either?

So I take you don't buy the whole "Last Godzilla Movie - Ever" shtick either? Considering that Godzilla: Final Wars was the fourth 'last movie ever' in the history of the franchise, not at all. Shogo Tomiyama (producer of every G movie since Godzilla vs. Biollante and current Toho president) also already went on the record not too long ago saying that Godzilla will definitely come back one day. He noted that the longest gap between new movies in the series being made was from Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975) to The Return of Godzilla (1984), and said that the series will probably return after another similar timespan as that. A lot of Godzilla websites got hasty and jumped to reporting that the next Godzilla movie was confirmed as coming out in 2013, but the truth is that they're just taking a break. They're not making any new movies right now, but sometime in the next decade (perhaps even sooner if Cloverfield is a hit) Godzilla will definitely be back.
