There's an old saying, that the sequel is never as good as the original. And anyone who's seen the likes of Futureworld (sequel to Westworld) and The Hills Have Eyes 2 (the first one) aren't going to argue.
But, dammit, that's not the whole story. Rack your brains and I'm sure you can think of a fair few second chapters that eclipse their original counterparts. Well, now 'tis the time to name them.
Controversial choices are approved here..
I always enjoyed Predator 2 more than the first, in that we not only saw more of ol' Pussyface this time around, but we also learned of the honour among their race - and of course, THIS was the film that started the whole Alien/Predator spin-off.
Everyone says Empire Strikes Back is one of the rare superior sequels but, nnng, I dunno. There was always something about it that didn't sit well with me. Maybe it's the dark tone - who the fuck wants to see Han Solo get tortured - and THEN frozen in carbonite? Was it better than the first film? I don't know. Not much can top the "yeeeeeeee-hoooooooooo!" holler from Han at the end of EpIV. And, to be honest, I always LOVED Return of the Jedi. Ewoks included.
There's always a strict divide in the Alien/Aliens camp. Those who prefer the more classic "horror" and "sci-fi" aspects of the original, and those who prefer the sheer adrenaline rush of the sequel. Well, The Curmudgeon is a strict Aliens devotee. The pulse-pounding music, the support cast (one of THE best line-ups in modern cinema), the one-liners and the classic mother vs mother final battle. AWESOME.
But that's just mine. Anyone else?
