Here's a pretty great infographic comparing online activity for most of the biggest nerdy pop culture phenomenons of the last several decades. Behold the numbers hehind the unstoppable force of Potter fanfiction, Star Wars wiki supremacy, and the appalling amount of Pokemon art among other things. One question though? Dr. Who, but no Lord of the Rings? Ridiculous.

Fan fiction - now there's a whole world of shit I wouldn't even begin to delve into. I remember a guy I made the mistake of replying to once through an Amazon review (he contacted me via e-mail) which led to him sending me a copy of his Boba Fett fan fiction. It was brutal, and all correspondence ended quickly after that.
So HP has 37 million Facebook fans and Star Wars only has six? Something wrong with that. Lord of the Rings is surely a bigger contender than Dr Who and Pokemon, although Pokemon's enormous ebay number makes sense.
I'd have though there'd be some more love for comic books as well on there. No Marvel/DC fandom? Think of the FB followers, fan fiction and ebay listings those companies must have.

As far as the Facebook fans go, I think that's a plain ol' generation gap issue, but this fanfiction stuff is just...yeesh. As much as I love to support anything geeky, fanfiction is just one step too far for me. Especially slash fiction. That is right up there with furries on my list of creepy fucked-up shit people are into.

Hey, you never know just HOW bad it is until somebody nuts up and tallies some official stats to analyze the depth and breadth of the sickness.
