There's pretty much only one work in the comic medium that has been held as "untouchable" for the past few decades. No sequels. No prequels. No characters transported to the mainstream DC Universe. One comic that was too good to be considered a comic by many, and was thus excluded from nearly all cash-in attempts for a long, long time in spite of it's popularity. Watchmen. Sure, there was the film (which was awesome in spite of bullshit complaints) and a lame video game tie-in that vanished instantly into the ether, but within the comic realm itself, Watchmen was a property you simply did not fuck with. Well, kiss that goodbye. Prequels incoming. Lots of them.
Now, it should be noted that I'm not 100% against this. Although I think it's a very bad idea to make a prequel or sequel to the original work, I do think it could be a good thing to bring these characters back and put them in the mainstream DC Universe to liven things up. The reason this hasn't happened is that both visually and thematically, the cast of Watchmen are based upon existing DC characters. However, they are twisted parodies/satires of those characters and different enough from the source material to stand out. Either way, the reason I'm posting this topic is because of this exceptional article weighing both sides of the argument for and against "Before Watchmen". Enjoy.

I personally do consider Moore to be a bit of an eccentric maniac as well as a genius, although I respect him for fighting the exploitative nature of the industry and the lack of creator's rights. but not only has he used characters from other creators in his works, but.....well he's made comic book porn with them that can only be described as illustrated fan fiction with high art pretentions.

Obviously, I'm not against comic writers using the existing characters of other authors, or even making porn, but the combination of the two is kind of disrespectful in my opinion. V for Vendetta and Watchmen made fantastic films by almost any standard, and Watchmen at least was more or as faithful as any comic book adaptation (save Sin City) out there. I respect Moore's principled removal from the adaptations, but the fact is that they were goddamn good and do justice to the original works.
Anyhow, hopefully these new prequels are kickass, but my plan is to ignore them altogether unless I hear they are must-reads because I do agree wholeheartedly with the notion that Watchmen is prefect and complete all to itself with nothing left to add. Opinions?
