So I read this amazing interview with controversial animation legend Ralph Bakshi, and I really have to share it. It's lengthy (a two-parter), but if you are a fan of the man's work, you are going to love it. And if you are saying "who the fuck is Ralph Bakshi?" right now, then now would be a really good time to find out by checking this interview out. Part 1 www.craveonline.com/film/interviews/184621Part 2 www.craveonline.com/film/interviews/184701-the-gods-truth-an-interview-ralph-bakshi-part-2To me, the most interesting factoid here is that Bakshi hated Fire and Ice. While I agree Wizards is a better film in many ways, Fire and Ice is still pretty goddamn badass. I REALLY hope they finally release Coonskin sometime soon. I've been waiting for years to see that one. Also, if you are a music fan (and I know you are), I really have to recommend American Pop (which didn't get a mention in the interview). Anyways, discuss please.

One of those guys who's name I didn't know but who's work I'm more familiar with.. by name only. As bad as it sounds, I may have heard of animated pictures like Fritz the Cat and Coonskin, (as well as the LOTR animated movie) but I've never seen any of them. Like, not even a frame.
Nice interview. Seems like a fairly approachable, polite guy, who could have taken the interviewers initial "Oh, wow! It's you!" approach as pretty unprofessional.
Anyway, I'm going to have to put my hand up and cry "ignorance" here, 'cos a lot of what was said went right over my head. "Wizards? Fire and Ice?"
Yeah, I got nuffin'.

I actually did not enjoy his LOTR, but like I said, American Pop is a must and Wizards will possibly knock you on your ass. Fire and Ice is more for hardcore fantasy fans, but Fritz the Cat and Heavy Traffic are very, very controversial adult satires. An online friend of mine once said that when Fritz played at a drive-in by a freeway back in the day, it literally caused accidents because people driving past it could not believe the shit that was onscreen. It was also parodied on The Simpsons. Bakshi is one of those guys that fought the studios every fucking step of the way and often had to finish his films using his own money. I think of him as the George Romero of animation. Disney usually tried to squash his films by releasing one of their own whenever one of his was out (he was openly critical of their evil corporate empire), but Wizards actually beat Fantasia and opened at #1 only to be promptly squashed when Star Wars became a huge surprise hit so every other movie was shoveled out of the way to make room for more Star Wars screenings, and as a result Wizards faded into obscurity. Dude has SHIT for luck, but man, I really dig his stuff. Check out this scene from Fritz depicting a race riot. www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyI1cXHXnlEAt 4:00, you see the US government bombing the ghetto with some very familiar-looking characters in the shadows cheering them on. That shit is awesome. Check some of his stuff out for sure.

Ha, I always KNEW Mickey and Donald were fascists.
I actually had no idea what Fritz the Cat was about. I knew it was an adult cartoon, but I didn't realise it was so political. That riot is so NOW and on the pulse it could have been written last week. The animation is top notch, as well. I love the shots of the pigs being surrounded by the mob, all red eyes and smiles, and the slo-mo animation when the crow is shot is stunning.
I seriously need to get involved in this shit. Thanks for posting.
