Here's a killer article from a man who knows what he's talking about. I kind of love the idea of an article of the cruelest things a creator has done to his characters. Whedon has a reputation for putting his characters (and through them, the audience) through hell in order to create genuine tension when the shit hits the fan knowing that nobody is safe. This is part of the genius of his work, but some of it is clearly an inherent sadism. Let me put it this way: in an episode of Buffy, Angelus snaps Gile's love interest's neck, then writes a fake romantic note implying a coming consumation of the relationship complete with trails of flower pedals and all the other trimmings leading him right to her dead fucking corpse. And that did not even make this top ten list. Damn. Spoilers abound so I highly suggest you read this if you have seen Serenity, Buffy, Angel, Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, and Dollhouse, or if you have no intention of ever watching them and just want to glimpse how much pain one man can cause his fans in the name of art.

For the record, the Buffy comic fails at good deaths and is mostly not written by Whedon so should not count. And the pregnancy/robot thing has me about to cancel my subscription. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Also, the Spike rape thing was lame. Not because it was "too far", it was just stupid. Buffy not only made it clear she was into rough sex, but it's well established that she can kick the shit out of Spike at will so that robbed the scene of any real impact. If they really wanted it to hurt, he should have gone after Willow. hey, I may have a knack for this, myself! Anyways, comments?
