An interesting blog from a brilliant performer and one of music's most underrated songwriters. Cooper often says he is too stupid to be anything but a rock star, but even he is light years ahead of this reality shit. It was a very interesting thing he said about American Idol. Remove the phony "judging" and force the contestants to create something themselves and and you may actually have something viable.
He is wrong that technology killing the industry, though. Pure, cold, unregulated capitalism did that. Start enforcing the laws against payola and let DJ's play what they think is good instead of what is on the list of songs from record companies who have paid to get played and we could easily have that old pre-MTV music scene back in a decade or so. In fact, Youtube and the like are the closest thing we have to a light at the end of this pop culture tunnel. Artists like OK Go have built careers off of viral internet culture and it's easier than ever to spread the word about new artists. I've gotten into at least a dozen or so new artists I'd have otherwise never heard and bought albums from them because of the "Your Verdict" series on this site.
