....somebody you wouldn't expect. After 700 issues of Amazing Spider-man, Marvel is throwing in the towel on the Peter Parker story (for now), killing the most beloved of all geek superheroes and leaving somebody else to fill his webbed shoes. Now some years ago, Ultimate Spider-Man was replaced by a Mexican guy, prompting some water cooler discussion at my job where some guys were complaining that Spidey CAN'T be a Mexican. When I told them it was ULTIMATE Spidey and not the "real" Spidey, they looked at me funny and said "whaaaa?", prompting me to wonder why they give a shit about a comic book character when they don't even read comics. But this is the real deal. And what could possibly be a worse replacement for the Peter Parker we know and love than a Mexican? How about this guy:
Yup. After another supervillain body-switching comic story, Pete bit the big one in Otto Octavius's terminally-ill body, leaving Doc Ock alive and infected with Peter's memories and life experiences in addition to his body and powers. Convinced that he can be a better superhero than the Amazing Spider-Man ever was, we now get:
and yeah, it looks like Ock is going to inherit some of Parker's luck with the ladies too.
Not sure how I feel about this. It's a bold (although most assuredly TEMPORARY) move, but I just can't give a shit about character deaths as anything but a curiosity any more. Nobody stays gone longer than a year or two (which is a mere two dozen issues max) and these shake-ups in mainstream comics tend to be uninteresting exercises in gathering hype more than anything else. A Parker-less Marvel Universe is not one I'm likely to visit often aside from the current Deadpool titles. Speaking of 'Pool, he also met his demise and the end of his ongoing title this year, but being true to the character, the writer made sure to point out the way for him to come back before the end even came. Most comics bullshit you a couple years after the fact with retcons, clones, time travel, or spiritual mumbo-jumbo to bring back characters you love. Deadpool already had his return story set before the issue ended and was back in a new series a month later. THAT'S how you do THAT. All righty then, thoughts on Marvel's choice here?
