www.toplessrobot.com/2013/01/the_ten_most_needless_nerdy_controversies_of_2012.phpGod, when you put all of these things together like that, it's pretty sickening, isn't it? Ironically, I point the "fake nerd" finger at people like this and not at girls pandering to this demographic for attention. Old school nerds did their homework and enjoyed things that were good on their own benefits regardless of miniscule errors. This....... thing where OCD freaks obsess and rage all over the place over the stupidest shit they can find is insane. That is not my people any more. This is fucking insane hikikomori/NEET bullshit and it is NOT the same as being a nerd/geek. I mean, really, some critics who have seen a film review it negatively and idiots who HAVE NOT EVEN SEEN THE FILM react by trying to destroy them? What kind of ignorance is that? How did Nolan achieve that level of reverence that people can't and won't admit that he made a lazy, poorly written, downright bad Batman movie while people shit all over Peter Jackson for making his fourth 3 hour Tolkien film (a prequel, no less), which is as awesome as the first three? Jackson may not be as pretentious as Nolan, but only an idiot would deny his true geek credentials next to that relative upstart. It'd be like kissing Geoff Johns' ass while disrespecting Jack Kirby or Alan Moore. No real nerd would do that. Lastly, yeah, sexism is having a real renaissance online these days. You know have no interest in PC crap, but I can't go anywhere online anymore without somebody raging against "sluts" or "whores" or giving undue attention to female posters like they were competing for post of the year on fatuglyorslutty.com/ or something. It's getting old. That's my rage, you got any?

This sounds like a common soundbite when fingers are pointed, but I really DO blame the media.
Things haven't changed that much when it comes to the internet. Stuff happens and nerds complain. Not nerds in the traditional sense; not the guys who love video games and cult movies and all of that stuff, but the self-righteous, self important pricks that think their opinion is Gospel and anyone who disagrees is either wrong or brainwashed. And I know the irony of someone like me saying that, but y'know I do all that Amazon stuff for the lulz.
Anyway, that's happened since the dawn of the internet, but it's only NOW that the media are actually, God fucking help us, listening to these people and actually taking them seriously. So now the blind, pointless outrage over nothing that always happens is now treated as actual news, leading to even more people wanting their voices to be heard. It's now spilled out so that it's not just your hardcore internet "soldier" that vents his spleen and gets noticed, it's now your average, everyday person.
Case in point; whenever the X Factor is on or Big Brother or something like that, the UK media now pounces on any little voting "controversy" and quotes barely literate Facebook, Youtube and Twitter rants from members of the public as actual sources. ZombieHunterBro2012 and JennylovesJustin4192 now have their outrage printed in national newspapers.
So every little piece of bullshit "controversy" is now actually a thing. "Fans react in fury" to something that doesn't even register as important is now front page fucking news. It's only going to get worse.
You say you've noticed sexism is on the rise, and I've noticed that too. "Make me a sandwich, LOL" and "why are you not in the kitchen?" are just two boring, stupid cliches you will see on every chatroom and website ever, alongside, of course, "tits or GTFO" type comments.
That "fat, ugly or slutty" website is just.. Jesus. Fucking depressing. When did .. when did THIS happen? When did we get like this?
I was actually going to write a thread about this sort of thing a few weeks ago, because I've noticed a huge jump in this sort of thing, alongside casual racism, where calling a black guy "nigger" is now not even blinked at on the internet, and the word "faggot" is now a replacement for the full stop. Imagine 10 year olds growing up reading that shit everyday. Yeah.
The fake geek thing is a puzzling one, and it irritates me when ANYONE, not just girls, uses pop culture icons as nothing more than an alternative to a Nike logo. A girl I work with brought a metal Superman lunchbox to work (I know, right! How delightfully COOL and RETRO!) and I asked her if she could tell me the name of Superman's real dad. She had no idea. She even said "I wear a t-shirt with a picture of a panda on it, I don't know HIS dad's name." How the fuck do you argue that point?
Man, what a thoroughly depressing thread you've created, Trashy.

Yeah, I'm on a roll with the shitty threads. Funny thing about "faggot" is it has officially graduated to endearment status in some online communities. It's practically interchangeable with "bro" or "mate". "Nigger" (or "nigga" if you make that distinction) has attained that status both irl and online. Alternatively, both are also used as ironic shock phrases just for the sake of obscene humor. I actually like where this is going in spite of my reluctance to ever use either of those words myself. By changing the way these epithets are used, we change their very meaning from something hateful into something less malevolent by treating them as what they really are: just really goofy sounding words people use to get attention. Also, the original meaning of tits or gtfo has been corrupted. Basically what that rule of the internet means is that any old asshole online can pose as a girl to jerk stupid guys around. So on an anonymous message board, if somebody claims to be a girl, the tits or gtfo demand was essentially a demand for proof of gender before the post could be taken seriously. It worked hand-in-hand with the rules "there are no girls on the internet" or "pics or it didn't happen" to discourage men from trolling as women and women from attempting to use their gender as a way to get attention (unless, of course, they showed their tits in which case attention was earned).

Wowwww. I did NOT know that about "Tits or GTFO". That actually makes a lot of sense.
The whole "faggot, nigger" thing is fine if it's in jest, and I get the idea that using the word like that strips it of its power, but when it's used to describe a black guy it can still be pretty horrible to see. And that just seems to be on the rise, certainly on things I've seen.
"Niggers tongue my anus" is fucking genius, though.

I can't really remember the last time I say somebody use the word "nigger" in public or online and really mean it. I'm sure it still gets some play here and there and maybe some of the people saying it on message boards mean it and just blend in with all the trolls doing it for shits and giggles, but I'm also pretty sure within my lifetime it'll become so watered down that somebody using the word in hatred will be seen as quaint and amusing to most.
