I'm kind of impressed that after being born with an Atari 2600 paddle (the kind that just had a wheel and one button) in hand that gaming can continue to surprise me. Take this latest announcement from Telltale Games. Telltale are currently riding a wave of hype after the crushing success of their story-based downloadable indie Walking Dead game that utterly buried the small amount of buzz that the full game based on the actual tv show. They are, of course, working on a direct sequel to their breakthrough smash, but also this:

Fables. The video game. Sheeeeeee-it. You maybe aren't familiar with the comic series, but "awesome" would be a good way to describe it. Picture the best possible modernization of classic fairy tales and there you have it. The big bad wolf (Bigby) as a noirish werewolf detective, Snow White as the cool and composed show-runner, Rose Red as the out of control sister looking to step out of Snow's shadow, Goldilocks as a revolutionary and inter-species romance advocate inciting the animals to rebel against the human-run government, Prince Charming as a freeloading man-whore, Geppeto as an evil overlord ruling with an army of magic puppets; the list goes on. Sex, violence, death, great reinventions of classic characters, this is how you do fantasy.
So yeah, the notion of a video game set in that universe makes all the sense, but seeing that it's not a high-profile property in any sense of the word I was more than a little surprised to see any company take this on seeing that the possibility wasn't even a thought in my head as a fan of the series. So there it is, proof that life can still surprise you with little unexpected windfalls after 35 years of cynicism. I'll be checking this out for sure.
