Alright, so about a week before release, they've finally got all of the playable characters announced for the new DC fighting game from the creators of Mortal Kombat. Here's the trailer and the list of fighters.
Aquaman Ares Bane Batman Black Adam Catwoman Cyborg Deathstroke Doomsday The Flash Green Arrow Green Lantern Harley Quinn Hawkgirl The Joker Killer Frost Lex Luthor Nightwing Raven Shazam Sinestro Solomon Grundy Superman Wonder Woman
Now, you may recall my statement when DC vs. MK came out along the lines of "no Black Canary, no sale". That statement stands. I mean, a lot of these characters are recycled from the previous game that should have been eliminated due to lameness (Luther and Shazam, I'm looking at you), but adding a practical non-entity like Ares or Killer Frost and Shazam's nemesis, Black Shazam....err Adam as well as Sinestro (Yellow Lantern) is weak sauce. I know Harley Quinn is a fan favorite and all, but not crazy about her inclusion either. Hawkgirl and Raven are very interesting additions and I can see why Cyborg is there even though Luther's inclusion kind of makes him pointless, but almost 1/3 of the roster is directly Batman-related. Given the size of the DC Universe, that's kind of disappointing. Any and all of these characters would have been cool to play as if the roster was bigger, but I find it hard to justify some of these characters being included while a character like Canary that is SCREAMING to be in a fighting game is left out. How about some Red Tornado? Gorilla Grodd? Blue Beetle? Static Shock? Star Girl? Jonah Hex? Etrigan? FUCKING LOBO?! I really can't behind this roster as is.
So what do you think? Any glaring omissions I missed or characters I dissed that you'd like to defend?

Yeah, that's not exactly an awe inspiring list at all. It would be different if they're going for the most famous characters only, I could see why they'd leave Black Canary out on that one. But some of these even I'VE never heard of, so God only knows why they wouldn't include her. A lack of Doomsday is surprising as well.
Thinking about it, they could be DLC that you'll have to pay extra for?

Doomsday is in there. They are planning DLC, but if MvC3 is any indication, they'll be charging $5 a character, and that is more than I'm willing to pay. $5 for, say, 4 characters would be acceptable, but charging a third of the price of the game for 1/7 of the characters already in the game is bullshit. And by the time they come out, everybody will likely be played out on the singleplayer anyways and you will have to be using your best characters online to compete. So not only are you being overcharged for new characters, but if the characters aren't designed to suit your style, you won't even be using them much after you beat their story modes in a couple hours combined (tops). I hate that kind of shit. Maybe I'll pick it up used when it's $15 or so like I did with DC vs MK or if they come out with an Ultimate edition with more characters and stuff, I'll maybe give it a shot.
[Edit] So naturally, the day after I make this post, they release the new launch trailer showing off some more of the badass super moves, including Aquaman's pet shark. Dig it.

All right, one more bump because I just saw this commercial featuring Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes and it makes me wantt to buy the fuck out of this game.
"AQUAMAN GOT MAD SHARKS!"
Mad sharks indeed, Jay. Mad sharks indeed.

Wow, that came out of nowhere. Kevin Smith shilling a DC game? Damn. Yeah, it looks pretty good. It's funny, compared to your earlier thread on the movie section, Marvel has DC whipped when it comes to movies but DC is the video game king. Speaking of which, have you heard of the sequel to Arkham City? batmanarkhamorigins.com/

Yup. As good as bought. I was worried when they said the next game was going to be silver age or something, but this is frankly what I was hoping for in the last film. Just Bats running a gauntlet of some of his nastiest villains.
DC's Batman games are the creme de la creme of this gen, but Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Marvel vs Capcom added to a decent Spider-Man franchise and the Wolverine game made for a pretty strong vidya generation for Marvel too.
