I'm a little bit late on this one, granted, in that both singles have been out for a few weeks, but I figured I'd let the dust settle. Plus I just thought of it.
Anyway, two of pop's premier players released brand new singles from brand new albums on the same day, so it was inevitable there would be a bit of competition, at least in the media and online.
In the blue corner, then, the rather pleasing form of Lady Gaga.
And in the red corner, the even more pleasing form of Katy Perry.
Personally speaking, Katy Perry is a take or leave kind of singer. She's had some decent pop songs, some really pretty weak ones too. But she's cooky, sexy and seems like a fun girl. Lady Gaga is someone I've been a genuine fan of since Paparazzi. She's clearly inspired by, if not in the same league as, the likes of Bowie and Madonna, but her two (two and a half if you count the mini-album tacked onto the first record) albums were packed full of great songs. Inventive, original, inspired..way more interesting than Perry's relatively lightweight fluff.
Anyway, that was then. If you've got a radio or MTV you're probably familiar with both, but for arguments sake (and Katy's jungle outfit), let's take a look at both and see which YOU prefer..?
Ladies first.
And then over to Katy.
Gotta say, really pretty disappointed with Lady Gaga's. It starts off OK enough, but that done to fucking death dance beat in the chorus really dates it. She's supposed to be an innovator, and that just sounds like everything that's been clogging up the charts for the last three years. I really hope that's not an indication of what the actual album will be like.
Katy Perry's song though, is just.. ace. Love it. Again, I'd never buy an album (and her recent claim of wanting to be the next Joni Mitchell is insane) but as pop songs go, this is top drawer stuff.
