It seems I can't go a single day anymore without seeing at least one insipid petition to the U.S. government to "make it a felony to not own a kitten!!" or "change the national anthem to 'Party in the USA!'" It would be funny if these things didn't actually cross the desks of politicians when they gain enough steam, or if, you know, the people who wrote them weren't serious. Here's 12 of the dumbest ones to actually accrue a significant number of signatures. www.modernman.com/12-dumbest-whitehouse-petitions/Over one thousand sigs to be able to give back a college degree in exchange for a full tuition return? Better idea: don't major in philosophy or average a 2.20 in business. Fuck my fellow Americans, man.

Ahem, yeah, even worse are the pricks that spread that shit onto Facebook and other sites you go on all the time. Cough. www.thecurmudgeon.proboards.com/thread/2895/help-fight-goodThe problem with these sorts of petitions is now ANYONE can make one, put it on Facebook and you can build a following there. This not only drives apathy among genuine voters ("what, sign ANOTHER fucking petition?") but also makes legitimate petitions about serious subjects, like child slavery, online pornography and saving the Psycho house, have less overall impact. I would, however, agree to build a Death Star. I'd just make one without a "fire a bullet in here and it blows everything up" part.

You are aware that some of those are jokes, right? 65,000 sigs to recount a election that wasn't even close, though? That's a bit disturbing. I love the idea that they are petitioning Obama to "uninstall" himself. I'm kind of down with the Master Chief one, though.

I've seen too many I've thought were jokes that turned out to be 4 srs that I don't give any of them the benefit of the doubt anymore. I also didn't mean to shit on the Psycho House, Curmudgeon. Though I should add that I find the whole idea of petitions way too passive. Someone needs to chain themselves to that Psycho House pronto.

Ben is entirely correct. Petitions are pretty much useless by and large. Just like updating your Facebook and Twitter feeds, it's a way to feel like you did something without actually fucking doing anything.
