Intelligent race of super beings that we are in the Fortress of Solitude, chances are we come across stupidity, online and in person, a whole lot. Ignorant comments, unintentionally stupid suggestions or observations.. what makes you pull THAT Rock face? 1. "I don't like music I don't know."I heard this just a few days ago, and it's something I've heard a few times in the past. I just.. I can't even comprehend the mentality of that. How do you get to KNOW music unless you hear it? It roughly translates as "I don't like safe, easily digestible pop music that is jack-hammered into my head 24/7." 2. "They come to live over here and don't learn our language."It's ironic that the people who write this generally can't write in fucking English in the first place, but this one always gets to me. I know people who live in Spain, and how many of them do you think speak Spanish? Precisely fucking zero. The first thing people do in another country is ask "do you speak English?" In my experience, people who come from other countries HAVE to at least grasp the basics or they're pretty much screwed. Not the same thing for us when we move abroad. That's a quick two from me. What else makes you make THAT face?

Why would you watch foreign/black and white movies?
Jesus tapdancing fuck. Does a lack of color make a story any less interesting? The fucking Twilight and Hunger Games books are written in black and white, yeah? And if you can read, why would subtitles be a problem? And why would anybody ever think that just because a film wasn't made in 'Murica, that it's not worth seeing? Do we have some sort of intellectual monopoly on creativity?

Ha, yeah. Good one. I was actually down on foreign horror for a while there because, as silly as it sounds, the words on the screen totally took me out of the movie. I watched a couple (the Grudge and the Ring, basically) and the subtitles kinda killed it for me.

Since I know Italian, enough to hold a basic conversation, I hear this sometimes when I use it: 'I wish I could learn a second language. Say *blank* in Italian'. No, I'm not a walking Rosetta Stone. And, well, have you ever really TRIED to learn a second language? Lei parla Italiano - do you?
I like to watch films in the original language too, so the subtitles thing really annoys me.
Also, I've noticed that since I'm an English teacher I'm always called on to spell words and tell people about books. Yes, maybe by most standards I am well-read, but I've not read every book and poem in the world, and don't know how to spell every word in the world. When people say 'Lemex, spell 'Glerbenderflub' for me I certainly pull that face.

Hey, it never hurts to ask, although I do imagine the odds of a random person in Scotland speaking one of those languages is pretty remote. Not like speaking Spanish in a lot of America, which is super common.

I think it is more the frustration of my dept being on the receiving end of "sales transfers" from our customer service centre in Mumbai who have been told a gazillion times that we are based in Glasgow and that no one in our dept speaks any language other than English (for complience purposes) however they just pass everything and anything through which craps all over our conversion. The eye roll is more for them really. #callcentreproblems
