The Fortress's weekly musical sharefest has provided a significant amount of the music that's filled my CD player and MP3 downloads, but Your Verdict has been gone for a while while we explored Pop Nightmares and Justice and put Classics on Trial. Well after all that the Curmudgeon has turned the reigns back over to Uncle Trashy and I felt like it would be a good time to relaunch the original concept and bring back that glorious potpourri of diverse musical stylings that defines the Fortress so well. Starting today, Your Verdict Strikes Back.
So what to pick first. This one took me a while to arrive on. Bringing in pop right off the bat is a no since we've been doing that and ditto with the old schoolness. We need something timeless, yet modern. Something that screams "FORTRESS!" and isn't going to be too challenging. I've got just the fellow.
No that is not Bruce Springsteen, but in my mind he is definitely boss. And where did I hear about Frank Turner? Right here on this website, when our host titled a thread "Trashcanman's new favourite solo act" in a pretty bold move. He was, however, not wrong. So it seems perfectly correct for me to bring back Your Verdict by bringing back a little of what I've learned from this punk rocker turned folk artist turned rock star.
Choosing a single song was rough, but remembering a thread a while back where the Curmudgeon complained about bonus tracks ruining the flow of the album, I remembered that on his last release, Tape Deck Heart, some of Turner's best work was relegated to bonus tracks that were released in a deluxe edition. And without this song in particular being put on that edition of that album, my life would be that much less complete. It opens with a line that pretty much sums up my entire worldview and gets better and better from there. It's a protest song, it's a geek loser anthem, it's punk, it's pop, it's folk, and it makes you want to be a fan of every band who ever made you wanna move your feet regardless of whether or not anyone else has ever heard of them. It's "We Shall Not Overcome" and some fan made a claymation video for it that is either really creepy or really awesome. Possibly both. Possibly neither. Enjoy.
