It's been posted on here before, but the BBC's multi-star redo of Lou Reed's "Perfect Day" was a pretty good idea done (I thought) quite well. For Children in Need, get a genuinely eclectic mix of musical talent and have them lend their vocals to the cover. There was a mix of generic pop scrubs and actual music heavyweights as well as old Lou himself on there. A lot of people hated it (Ricky Gervais went on a lengthy rant about it on his radio show), but it was a huge success. The formula has been created, so why not use it again? Pop scrubs, genuine stars, classic hit, original artist..what could go wrong? How about everything. Here's their take on "God Only Knows", 3 minutes of pop music so sweet and perfect it can't be bettered. But it can sure be ruined. youtu.be/XqLTe8h0-joIdiots like One Direction I expected, Elton will sing on anything..but Dave Grohl?? God Only Knows what he was thinking here.

Brian May's hair is white? Fuck I hate to see shit like that! Brian Wilson is auto-tuned to the gills, and that makes me really sad. And for something designed to raise money, they sure seem to have spent a crapload on special effects. Otherwise, I actually kind of liked this better than the Perfect Day one. Sorry.

Ha, fair enough. Mrs C quite likes it, I think it's dreadful.
The BBC recently announced they were cutting BBC 3 from their schedule as a cost cutting measure, and it was home to all kinds of great offbeat, alternative comedies (think Wilfred, the Mighty Boosh, Angry Boys), great fantasy drama (Being Human, The Fades) and great documentaries (Mark Gattis' superb three part "History of Horror" and all kinds of things about the art of the single, all time best albums etc).
So for the BBC to then say "God Only Knows" what they would be without music seems a bit rich, especially as they're pulling the plug on the one channel that actually celebrated it.
A grey haired Brian May I can handle, but an auto-tuned Brian Wilson is just heart-breaking.
