Feeling 1980's today? Good. Remember these guys? That is Mark Knopler egotistically standing in front of the rest of his band Dire Straits, best known for being the only instance where the word "faggot" is okay to play repeatedly and unironically in the radio. But when you write one of the defining tunes of the early MTV era with one of the most badass guitar riffs of all time in it, forgiveness comes easy. But I'm not giving you Money for Nothing and/or chicks for free today. Just a Shakespeare-meets-Dylan tale of one chick and one dude. Dire Straits was a pretty cool band with some solid hits from the era, but this is one I never heard on the radio and it's my favorite by far. I love everything about this song except the video, which is an amusingly literal interpretation of the lyrics from a time when apparently loudly smacking chewing gum was the sexiest thing a woman could do. Still, great song.

The hits keep on comin'. I didn't actually know about the "faggot" line in that song. I must have missed that the 10,000 times I've heard it.
This was an easy verdict for me this week because I know this song quite well, even if it does bring out fairly uncomfortable memories for me. It was pretty much my ex-fiancée's favourite song. Obviously great, but damn, man. Thanks for bringing all that shit flooding back.
