This week's pick has been giving me fits for a month. Right from day one when I was asked to take over the Fortress's weekly music pick I knew I was going to have to throw some Deltron into the set, but I just could not decide what song. Who the hell is Deltron? These guys.
That's a hip-hop dream team consisting (from left to right) of talented DJ Kid Koala, rapper Del tha Funky Homosapien (who you may recall made the Gorillaz seem like guests on their own breakout hit, Clint Eastwood, by stealing the show with two devastating verses), and superproducer Dan the Automator and they've probably done more in two albums to push forth the idea of hip hop as a true multicutural art form than the rest of the genre put together.
In the past 15 years, the terrific trio has produced two epic dystopian space opera concept albums loaded with incredible tracks, nerdy sci-fi lyrics, social commentary, and general awesomeness. Don't believe sci-fi and hip-hop can mix? Head to the Amazon page for their debut album 3030 and count how many times the reviews use some variation of the phrase "greatest rap album ever". I fucking dare anyone to disagree after listening to even one track. 3030 may not have the legendary status of a Straight Outta Compton, Paul's Boutique, or The Chronic, but in terms of originality and visionary artistry it's hard to beat.
One of my fondest wishes would be for the sonic adventures of 3030 and its sequel The Event II to be animated in full, but given the underground nature of Deltron's music, we've pretty much just goo fan videos. The one I've chosen appears to have been cobbled together from Gorillaz videos, but it gets the job done of giving you something to look at while you enjoy a devastatingly great track. This is "Things You Can Do" from 3030 and know that I could have easily gone with almost any track from either album and been confident in its awesomeness.
