Okay so now we have #Metalgate, which stems from a quote from the worst music magazine in the history of the medium. Here's what SPIN had to say during their list of the best metal albums of 2014:
I'm pretty sure something has to be history before you decide which side was "right" (which is an issue way too complex to bother with here and thus is best avoided when talking about the best metal albums of any year), but the real thing here is AT WHAT FUCKING POINT IN THE HISTORY OF THIS PLANET HAS HEAVY METAL REPRESENTED CONSERVATIVE VALUES!?!? I could give a shit about any artist's politics. I love me some Ted Nugent. But this statement coming from any publication -even SPIN- is just too much.
A typical metal concert experience for me has consisted of things like anti-corporate rants from Bruce Dickinson, Lamb of God leading an enthusiasitc audience in a chorus of "fuck you's" aimed at then-President Bush, countless anti-war anthems, Slayer screaming "GOD HATES US ALL!", Otep oozing militant lesbian feminist from every pore, any number of piercings and middle fingers thrown about, and the guitarist from Killswitch Engage being cheered on while acting (and being) flamboyantly gay, not to mention Rob Halford. I seriously cannot think of a single metal band that represents conservative values in any way aside from Metallica's attitude towards pirating. Even if you go for the pop-rock of the 80's, you've got a bunch of long-haired dudes in girly make-up. Can somebody please explain this to me? It's eating my brain.
Metal is still dogged by the issues that arise from its deep-seated conservative values, but thanks to an increase in conversations about racism, politics, and feminism, those on the right side of history have gained solid ground.
