Terror attacks? Doomsday clocks? Ebola? What-EVER, dude. Right now in Britain the only thing we're talking about are boobs. Yup. Lovely, bouncing boobs. Rule Britannia.
Except the majority of discussion is banning the very sight of them from the Sun, the best selling tabloid newspaper that's had "Page 3", that peculiar British institution that shows a naked woman on the third page of the paper, for about forty years. So, alongside the news of the day sits a smiling naked model with some asinine comment on what's going on in the world ("lovely Lucy, 21, thinks fox hunting should be banned. When we have our own foxes like Lucy, who could argue?" That sort of thing).
For a short time Page 3 was kind of celebrated as some positive message to women, as Page 3 never shows stick thin "model" types, preferring the fuller figure (read: BOOBS). Can't argue with that, I suppose.
The "Ban Page 3" campaign has always been going on, but it's really picked up steam over the last year, so much so that the Sun actually pulled the page. Women's Rights groups celebrated, it made national headline news (seriously, what the fuck else are we going to talk about? NEWS?)
Turns out they didn't axe it, and a naked hottie appeared on Page 3, winking at the camera as the paper made some tongue in cheek reference to being "discussed in lesser papers."
So what do you think? Is a naked woman appearing in a daily newspaper really something that should be happening in 2015? Is it promoting exploitation of women? Is it sexist, outdated and degrading? Or just a bit of harmless eye-candy that you glance at briefly before turning the page?
Go.
