Reading an artist's Wikipedia page can often get you on board before you've even heard the music. Prince, who taught himself piano at the age of seven, his first tune he learned was the Batman theme tune? On board. Lou Reed, who was given electroshock therapy by his Jewish parents to "cure him" of his bisexuality, only to then say his only God was rock n roll? On board.
And then there's today's choice, an English singer who grew up listening to Suzanne Vega and Leonard Cohen, coming to the conclusion you don't need Whitney Houston power vocals to get your message across. She found a three string guitar in her parents closet the same year and began to teach herself. She moved to London at 16 and worked in a market to put herself through music school. Again, on board.
It's a pity then, that for as well received her two albums to date have been, it hasn't resulted in any commercial success, despite being hailed as the new Kate Bush. That's pop music for you.
So, the lady in question is Polly Scattergood.
Despite sounding like the sort of name the Simpson's would give one of their oh-so-very British characters when the Simpson's travel to London, it is actually her real name and "Others Too Endless", today's track, is a world removed from the bubblegum pop of Taylor Swift or the sassy "kick them to the curb" front of Beyonce.
I'm not 100% sure what this song is about; whether it's a break-up or Polly is talking about a rape or abuse? Make your own mind up, but man oh man, does it sound like she's about to burst into tears. It's an odd song that slowly grows on you so maybe the one listen approach isn't right for this. But whatever, take a listen.
