I know, I know, I know. This should have been here LAST week. In fact, I've barely been on here the last week, but hey, two words, yo; MOTHER and OPERATION. That'll get you off my back. (PS - she's OK).
Anyway, back to business, and there seems to be a moment in time, a blood moon, an eclipse, that makes me become singularly obsessed with a male solo artist. Happened with Prince. Then with Bowie. Now with this guy, where I must get every album and every single the guy has ever released.
He's been mentioned on here before, not to be judged, but just as a "this is my favourite album of the year" mention. In fact that album holds a place in my all time top ten, the first recent release to crack that chart in years.
It's Mr Adam Green.
Annoyingly, it was actually Mrs C who discovered him, downloading a few tracks from iTunes because "it was the sort of hipster shit you like."
"Hipster shit" is a bit unkind, because this is no scenester who just got a lucky record deal. He's actually been making music for almost 20 years, first as part of cult "Anti-Folk" duo the Moldy Peaches, making scrappy, lo-fi songs before he went solo.
His solo material keeps a lot of the humour of his early work, but he actually started to, like, sing and play properly. The barely there production of the Moldy Peaches records was also changed, because an album of 24 sixty seconds nonsense jams about dirty sex and being stoned can get pretty tiresome.
And lo, my third favourite solo artist was born, and even though I've only been listening to him for a year or so, I've already bought every album and single he's released. I went to see him live, and it was a riot; he came out in a pirate hat, ended up encoring three times (by the end he was just asking the audience what they wanted to hear), he swam across the audience, from the stage to the back and then back on stage again, he came out at the end and signed CD's and took pictures, he even gave me a hug for some reason. So, so cool.
Anyway, fan boy gibbering aside, it was a hell of a difficult choice of song to play today. Do I pick the song that made me a fan in the first place? Do I play one of the many songs I've almost worn out?
Na, I'll go with this, the lead single from his last album, showing he can write infectious, radio friendly pop songs seemingly at the drop of a (pirate) hat.
