So the last four weeks have been of fairly obscure artists you've never heard of that I've had to give a fairly long-winded description of who they are and why you should care. That shit gets old fast. So I decided that instead of little known acts I'd, you know, pick the biggest band of all time.
Nickleback, obviously.
Now, you might just think I'm going for easy likes here, like some "1 Like = 1 Prayer" Facebook dick. Like, hey guys, d'you think "Eleanor Rigby" is a good song? But I'm actually going for a Beatles single that garnered much negativity when it was originally released, even though it's common practise now.
When the "Anthology" CD Boxsets were released in the 90's, it was pretty much Heaven for Beatle's fans. A chance to hear rare, original recordings, live cuts and out-takes from the Beatles was something that just didn't happen outside of the bootleg trade. But the star attraction of the enormous 2 CD set was "Free As a Bird", a track originally recorded as a demo by Lennon shortly before his death, and then re-worked by the three remaining Beatles for inclusion on this new album.
Some people called it desperate, some people called it grave-robbing. Was this REALLY a Beatles song? OK, all four Beatles can be heard singing on it, but only through re-recording, overdubs and all kinds of non-organic studio stuff. And in the wake of this, "new" albums from Michael Jackson, Tupac and Amy Winehouse have all surfaced, but this was the big one back in the day.
So what do you think of it? As a song that shouldn't have ever existed, I think it's pretty damn sweet. Proof that, even in death, there really is no stopping the Beatles.
