Guys, this is Sandi Thom.
I'm introducing you because you almost certainly won't know who she is. In 2006 she had a outta nowhere number one single with "I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair"), a fairly inoffensive tune that read like any number of "my generation sux, I like real music from the past" Tumblr blogs. She was supposed to be one of those Bieber Youtube sensations who got a record deal after becoming a word of mouth phenomenon, something that was widely questioned and almost certainly debunked. Charlie Brooker actually called her "the musical Anti-Christ" at one point. And last time I checked, punk rockers sure didn't walk around with fucking flowers in their hair.
Anyway, that was almost 10 years ago and she's done diddly squat of note since. Sure, she's brought out albums (think Amy Macdonald without the tunes) but no-one cared.
Fast forward to 2015, and she went out of her way to create a song that was "perfect" for radio play. But they, as they have done for 9 years, didn't put her on the playlist. And this is how she reacted.

Well, that's certainly a way to deal with it. Admittedly she's got a ton of publicity from it, almost all bad, but publicity all the same. But really, who the fuck sits down with the sole intention of writing a song that ticks all the boxes of a certain radio station and its demographic but the most dead-eyed and corporate of musicians? Hey, I get we all gotta eat and her record sales won't be putting her in any penthouse any time soon, but fuck. And then to bitch and cry about it online? I could count on one hand my current favourite bands who get played on the radio. That's why I don't listen to the radio. You ever hear the New Pornographers on the radio? Nope. Do they bitch and complain about it? Same answer.
So what do you think? Justified tears, or entitled whinging?
