As bad as this is, I'll defend Yahoo for a moment by pointing out that the author didn't really say much about the album itself and rather took the opportunity to promote Rhianna's tour instead. BUT, having said that, it still pisses me off that they think their readers are this stupid, and it irritates me even more that they're probably right.

It's funny because I've actually felt this way about pro music reviews for a while. As if the whole thing was so scripted ans safe that it's like they don't even care what the music actually sounds like. But writing a template review for an album nobody has heard complete with [insert relevant song title here] is just about the most pitiful thing I can think of.

I pay such little attention to the professional shit I guess I never noticed how bland it's gotten. Makes you wonder who they're actually paying to write these things. The template you linked to could be reused any number of times. I've always stuck to the amateurs on Amazon because frankly, a lot of those folks are more entertaining and talented than the pros. There's a lot of junk there too, but it doesn't bother me to sift through the garbage so much as long as I can find the good ones.

Same here. There was a pint some years ago where I was reading reviews in Rolling Stone and just got thoroughly disgusted with the pretentious non-content of the reviews. Like why am I even reading this masturbatory drivel at all? Fans are where all the passion andd knowledge is, and that's where you've got to look to get any relevant commentary anymore. I'm currently writing about pro video game reviews and looking at Metacritic almost every album has a similar rating. It's like every contemporary review is written specifically not to agitate either fans or haters. No actual opinions allowed.

Yeah I read about this but didn't actually see the "review" before now. God that's depressing. Fill in the blanks though and, like Ben said, this could sum up pretty much any pop album. Talk about cut and paste bullshit. Whoever gets paid for doing that, whatever they get paid, gets paid too much.
I still take some notice of reviews but only from certain sources. NME and Q magazine will go into some depth and detail about the album itself, what works/what doesn't, but a lot of them I find myself not agreeing with. But then, it's just some guy listening to an album with a notebook in his hand and a stack of others to listen to that day.. how detailed and accurate are they going to be?
