With a new year comes a new gaming obsession, and this time it's actually spread. I've been a fan of the Lego games for some time now, even buying the older titles after playing the new ones. Sadly, going backwards doesn't really work with the Lego games as they got SO much better as they went on. Lego Star Wars was one of the first games and it's heartbreakingly average compared to the later games. But anyway, Lego games. Big fan.
I'd watched the trailer for Lego Dimensions and my heart sunk. It looked and sounded fantastic but it sounded EXPENSIVE, falling into the same category as Skylanders and Amibo's and all that other gimmicky money eating crap. I'd have to pass.
But then Mrs C handed me a huge box on Christmas Day, and this was after Batman: Akrham Knight. And it was the Lego Dimensions starter pack; the game, the first three figures (Batman, Gandalf, Wildstyle from the Lego movie), the Batmobile and the totally-not-a-Stargate portal and character touch pad as well. The whole thing looks awesome.
I realised I suck at actually physically building Lego, so Mrs C built the whole thing for me. After that she started playing a Lego game for the first time..and that was that. Hooked. Both of us. So it makes it easier to stump up the cash for the new player packs if there's going to be two of us using them, I suppose.
It's arguably the most ambitious game I've ever played. It's reportedly got a three year projection, advertising the figures and toys as being part of the game and any upgrades/sequels for "years to come." Some of the figures and playsets aren't even out yet.
But the game itself. Holy shit. It's got the same effortless play as the other Lego games, the same scripts packed with zingers, sight gags you miss the first time around and enough nerdy references to keep the adults happy (references to HAL from 2001, yeah, 8 years olds are all about that movie). And the depth and scope of the movie is incredible. You want Marty McFly fighting the Wicked Witch? Gollum jealous of the Riddler? Glados from Portal giving killer put-downs to Batman? And the attention to detail is stunning. The first level is Oz, and it looks like it's lifted straight from the movie (Batman attacks the Scarecrow, obviously).
So this looks to be 2016's thing. We've already bought the Doctor Who pack, and it comes with a new level and the Doctor who can transform into all 12 of his regenerations, complete with archival dialogue from the actors themselves, and the TARDIS changes to look like the TARDIS from that particular era (even turns black and white!) Fucking nerd Heaven.
I don't even want to think how much it's going to cost, though...
