We're spoiled with technology these days. Spoiled. We huff and puff in frustration if an entire video game, with 3D graphics and stereo sound isn't downloaded in seconds onto our fucking mobile phones. We've got more TV than we could ever watch at our fingertips and we bitch because there's a slight buffer as it downloads. It takes a whole lot to impress us.
But, I'll admit, Samsung's VR headset impressed the hell out of me.
I'm an Apple fanboy and wouldn't go down the Android phone route again, so I felt an enormous pang of envy that I can't actually use the VR headset. It looks like those crappy "Virtual Reality" headsets Nintendo tried to pretend were a thing back in the late 90's, but instead of just bombarding your eyes with lights and giving you a headache, this looks and feels very much like THE FUTURE.
So I tried this a couple of months ago, and it's stunning. It's like something you would see in a sci-fi movie set in the future when the hero of the movie gets sucked into a real life video game. You strap on the headset and BAM. It's like you're there. Seriously. The video I watched had the viewpoint of being on the outside strip of a helicopter. It was like being there. I looked down, and the camera tilted down, I looked up and saw the helicopter blades spinning above me. I looked behind me and saw the back of the helicopter and the blue sea beneath me.
OK, that was about all it could do. If I jumped I didn't plummet to my doom. I couldn't put my hand up and get it sliced off with the blades (I think.. I didn't try it). But imagine THIS technology in just five years time. And this is something compatible with a PHONE. Imagine a Playstation going onboard with this shit (which I think is in the works). I once asked on this page about a year or so ago "can you imagine games ever advancing beyond what we have now". And this is surely the answer. Imagine the unimaginable terror of walking around a Resident Evil level with this headset. Imagine a GTA style game driving around an all immersive city. And let's cut the shit - imagine porn.
So have you tried this VR tech? What do you think?
