I don't know if they've retired the franchise or not (I thought Origins was the Arkham swansong), but I'm heavily engrossed in Batman: Arkham Knight right now (a full 6 months after getting it, thanks for eating up my entire life, Lego games).
I think part of the reason I didn't play it straight away and went onto Lego Dimensions was the sense of "been there, done that" that the initial first play of Arkham Knight has. It's a comfortable fit, it plays exactly how you expect it and remember it, but.. we've been here before, right?
I'd like to think I was wrong, and the trials, Riddles, sub-missions and Batmobile races and battles don't reinvent the Batman wheel, but they sure do make it a lot more fun. It's about as far as the game engine can go, I think.
So could they take it any further? Is there really anywhere else for Bats to go from here? I audibly groaned when the Joker was revealed (that was the dream sequence created by Scarecrow's gas..that's as far as I am and I don't know who the Arkham Knight is so NO SPOILERS on that one, please). We've seen all his villains, sovled a bunch of Riddles and met pretty much every Batman character there is.
Could this game engine be adapted to suit any other comic book franchise? If the absurdly detailed Marvel Lego met with the realistic approach and eye-popping visuals of these Batman games you'd have the best game ever made. Could a Spider-Man game work? A Justice League? An Avengers?
Or would you be happy with more Gotham?

Ha, well, there you go. Did you post this here before? I may have skipped it for spoilers (and I didn't read on past your warning). Great article, though, and I kind of agree. Arkham Knight is superb. Great story and action, even if it does rely way too much on the Batmobile. But when you start bringing in extra levels with a playable Harley Quinn, it's clear you've run out of things for Bruce to do. Everything's been done. We've fought and beaten the Joker, Penguin, Scarecrow and Two Face many times. What more can be done in this franchise? Well, according to this list of upcoming video games, the answer would be "something." www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwdZvJfxqtE"Being" Batman sounds pretty intriguing, but not enough to splash out the kind of money needed to play it. Again, that's a gaming platform with endless potential, but nothing to get too excited about just yet. But then there's the re-release of Parts 1&2 as the remastered next gen title "Return to Arkham" which I can't really see being a pressing issue to buy. It'd be fun to play them and it look all shiny, but really, the PS3 games looked great anyway. This, however, could be worth a look. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_(2016_video_game)You were a big fan of the Walking Dead games, weren't you? Could they work with Bats?

Oh yes. Telltale has taken on tons of franchises from Borderlands to Jurassic Park to Fables to Game of fucking Thrones and managed to improve on most of them and expand the universes with major success. After that, Batman should be easy mode for them. I can't wait. The funny thing is that Telltale announced this huge partnership with Marvel a couple years ago where they were going to make a series of five games based on their characters (didn't say which), but somehow we got a DC franchise first with no further announcements regarding this massive Marvel partnership.
