Guess what I did last night?
Yup. I finally realized my longtime dream of attending Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. Fucking yay. American Horror Story, The Purge, Walking Dead, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw, and more. Sadly, the night was marred by out of control crowds so I didn't get to experience the Exorcist, Freddy vs Jason, and a few other attractions. But still, what a night.
When they opened the gates to the park, they sounded a Purge horn and literally dozens of purgers came flooding out and into the crowd with revving chainsaws. It was INSANE. Behind them were Uncle Sam and Statue of Liberty on stilts, which were just unnatural to see in real life. That's how you start the night off right.
The TCM maze was the best. It literally smelled of rotting flesh and had fake dead pigs (and human body parts) dangling from meathooks, obscuring your vision for the scares. At one point you walk into a room and Leatherface slams open the door behind you with an apron on and mallet in hand straight out of the original film. That was pretty awesome. The Halloween one focused on the first sequel and reenacted scenes straight out of it. In one room, Myers is drowning/boiling a fucked up dummy of a woman and the actor just stares straight into your soul as he does it. Then there's a room full of glowing jack o lanterns and some of them were actually masks being worn by actors who were rendered invisible in their black outfits against the black walls in the dark so they looked just like the decorations until they came at you.
Eli Roth did his own twist on the studio tram tour where they showed you a creepy backstory video and then dropped you off amongst some sets (including the Bates Motel!) that had been taken over by a colony of killer clowns. Some areas not marked as attractions turned out to be Purge zones as well, which added a lot of spontaneity to the walks. At one point we were walking towards the American Horror Story maze (longest wait of the night) and suddenly there was mist everywhere and a Purge horn sounded and we were walking right into a scene from the Purge movies with dancing psycho girls and chainsaw commandos menacing everyone.
My wife was positively terrified of everything, but I think I may have hurt a scare actor's feelings trying to lighten her up. ONe of the maniacs came running at us and I responded like this:
The dude actually broke character to respond, which just made me laugh harder. Then later I thought I may have actually bummed him out for him to react that way so I decided scare actors maybe have feelings too. But I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for long enough to pretend to be scared. I just stopped openly mocking them.
Anyways, good times. I wouldn't do it again because the lines and crowding were excruciating and very much lessened the experience from what it could have been, but I'm still really glad I got to go at least once before I die. Totally worth it.
