So I was looking at an old article online that listed the Greatest Scottish Albums of All Time. It was the usual thing when reading these lists, ask "where the fuck is..", face-palm over some piece of shit album being higher placed than your favourite.. but when I got down to number one I went "oh.. yeah, OK." It's not MY favourite Scottish album of all time, (although it did make the top ten), but it's ALWAYS in those "Greatest Albums Ever" lists, and well, yeah. It's very good.
The band in question are one of rock's true survivors. Formed in 1984 and released their 11th album a few months ago, they are a band who refuse to be pigeon holed, so it was actually pretty difficult picking a song to showcase them with. Drugged out psychedelica, straight up Stones inspired rock 'n' roll, dance.. and what's annoying is, they're really fucking good at anything they put their mind to, the bastards.
The band in question are Primal Scream.
Just when people began being comfortable with Primal Scream, with 1991's Screamadelica (that's the Best Scottish Album Ever, by the way) and then the classic single "Rocks", they then went down an ambient dance and hip hop path before scaring the living shit out of everyone with XTRMNTR, a much harder, angrier and political album than anything they'd done before, with songs like "Swastika Eyes" and "Kill All Hippies" getting all kinds of critical love but not exactly the sort of thing you'd hear on the radio on your way to work. And then they released their next album with "Country Girl", their most accessible and biggest hit single yet. There really is no working these guys out.
And you know what? If you're new to the band, the hits are really where you need to start. So this is "Country Girl" from 2006. And this chick is rocking the Harley Quinn look 10 years before it was cool.
