The 90's. Hell of a time, all being told. Spoiled for choice with amazing bands, you could have pretty damn accurate versions of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat in your bedroom.. and a young chap called Quentin Tarantino changed the movie biz forever.
We're not here to talk about any of his movies, (this is "Unmentioned", remember?) but we're going to talk about a film that was clearly inspired by his work, and obviously greenlit on the success of it. Sharp talking gangsters? Cool characters? Hip dialogue? Film it already.
And here's a personal confession. I have never cried at a movie. Ever. Not that I'm some macho meathead, I've just never been, like, THAT invested that it's ever happened. But this movie, weirdly, absurdly, was the closest I ever got, watching it alone at 1am as the rest of the house was asleep.
It's "Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead."
History really has forgotten this film. No 2 disc extended Blu Ray cuts for it, no talks of sequels or prequels or really any mention of it at all. And that's a shame, because even though it's nothing drastically new, it takes the tried and tested gangster formula and does some fun things with it (Steve Buscemi's ruthless, almost supervillain like assassin really is one of the most under appreciated, should be cult characters). The cast, from fairly predictable casting of Christopher Walken to inspired choices like Christopher Lloyd) are all great, and any movie with a line like "I AM GODZILLA, YOU ARE JAPAN!" just hits fucking legendary status straight away.
Ever seen this one?
