We're having a bit of a Tom Hanks marathon in the Curmudgeon household, and really, this entire series could be filled with Tom Hanks movies. Have we EVER mentioned a movie with Tom Hanks in it? Like, ever?
So we're combining Netflix, Amazon, Sky Movies and a bunch of Amazon buys (ever look at the prices of pre-owned DVD's recently? Fuck, talk about worthless) and some films I've not heard much about are great ("Captain Phillips, Saving Mr Banks), some are curious but charming ("Hologram For the King") and one was absolutely fucking dire ("Cloud Atlas"), but there's one in particular I'm going to talk about, because I just KNOW everyone has seen it.
I mean.. is there anyone of a certain age who hasn't seen this?
And it's strange watching it now, because as a kid this film was absolute wish fulfillment. Get a top job testing TOYS? Live in a cool flat with everything you've ever wanted to buy? Touch a girls boob? Sign me up.
But watching it now and you're not thinking that. You're thinking "in what world does a guy walk into an office where he doesn't even know (or have) a social security number and get a top job? How does he get paid? Into the bank account he won't have? And let's not forget the living hell his parents are going through, thinking their son has been kidnapped. Or the fact a grown woman has sex with a 13 year old boy and the audience are OK with it.
It's just.. there is a lot of weird stuff going on in this film and a lot of unanswered questions (what does he tell his parents when he returns home after being missing for months?) It's still fun, but unlike Tom Hanks in this, it really hasn't aged too well.
