I got sidetracked with this series because of my holiday, but we're back on the saddle once again. So what have we had so far? Horror's, comedies, gangster films..what's left? How about a musical? Woah now, don't click out the thread just yet. This isn't High School Musical or anything. It's not even classic kids fare like the Wizard of Oz or Mary Poppin's. In fact, this is, I think anyway, the only genuinely COOL musical that is really meant for guys. I certainly can't think of another one. And even if there is one, it's not beating this one. Enter Jake. Enter Eli. Enter We'll forget the sequel happened (I've still never watched it) and focus on the original, and man has this film got everything or what? It's funny, it's got arguably the greatest car chases in any movie, the cast are great, the two leads are instant movie icons and that soundtrack..damn. This isn't even one of the more famous songs from it and it's still fantastic. They were on mission from God, alright.

I've got to admit, I really don't get the love for this one. It's a decent film, but for a comedy that's as long as it is, it's pretty fucking short on jokes. I spent years wondering if the whole Blues Brothers thing itself was a joke. Like, is it funny because they're white dudes playing black music whitely? Or because it's Belushi and Aykroyd? Is it because the music isn't even blues? They toured and performed as a band first so is the band supposed to be serious and the movie funny? And the endless car chases just baffled me. Like, why? It's not music and it's not comedy and it adds nothing to the story. Just not my thing. Anyhow, I did enjoy it for the music if nothing else. Great performances and amazing cameos, but as a movie I found it pretty weird watch. I actually listened to one of their albums and ended up wishing I was listening to Sam and Dave or Otis Redding; you know, the people who actually made that kind of music and were genuinely good at singing it.
