And it's something we're all familiar with. And I'd even started my own thread a few months back about it, but you know what? It deserves another one.
It's American Horror Story: Roanoke.
Just.... hoo boy, where to even start?
Well, we had begun watching it a few months back, but ended up not enjoying it and watching something else. We only came back, dragged back almost against our will, to watch it out of sheer duty from seeing the other seasons and knowing that they all tie in together in some way.
And after finishing the whole damn series last night, I can categorically state that this season of American Horror Story is, without hyperbole, the worst TV show I have ever watched. Not ever seen, there's been plenty of terrible shows I've binned after a few episodes, but this is the worst show I've ever watched till the end.
It's almost like they wanted to do a parody of a horror film but forgot to make it funny. Or the writers had been huffing paint, or the actors simply forgot how to act (although when they're expected to say the fucking nonsense that's coming out of their mouths, I think Oliver Reed and Marlon Brando would struggle to make it convincing.
Without any major spoilers, if you're a masochists who wants to watch this, it's a documentary re-telling the events of a fated stay in a haunted house, cutting between re-enactments of the events and then cutting to the actual people involved for talking head segments. It's jarring, tedious, kills any sense of tension and adds nothing to the show. THEN it goes to a reality show ABOUT the show, with behind the scenes footage of TV execs planning the show itself, all filmed in "reality TV" style. It's obnoxious and not nearly as clever as it thinks it is. In fact, in many times, it's really, really fucking dumb.
Add to that rip-offs of better horrors (Blair Witch especially, but there's a really stereotypical Texas Chainsaw Massacre family thrown in for good measure as well), some of the worst acting and writing you'll see on a once great show and.. wow. Honestly, it actually gets worse as it goes along. I was often sitting with my head in my hands wondering what I was doing watching it. It's THAT bad.
I don't know what the next season of American Horror is going to be about, but after the decline of Hotel and the absolute mad spiral of despair of this crock of shit, it needs to be GREAT, or I'm out. And what a shame it is to say that.
