I don't keep up to date with the US comics of Spider-Man (I buy a monthly UK comic that has reprints so I'm about a year behind or something) but I saw THIS picture.. And I just have to know - who the HELL is that?!

Beats me, but have you heard of the events of "One More Day"? Let's just say my Spidey subscription has been cancelled.

I know this dickhead who gets all the new Spidey comics (downloads them, if you please) from America and he has to rush over and bleat out every new spoiler he can. I think I've heard of this, just tell me if I've got the gist of it..
It has something to do with Dr Strange?

Nice detective work, Hackers! I had come up empty.
If the Sorcerer Supreme's involvement is all you know then you are alright, Curmudgeon. Let's just say that Marvel had an ass-backwards notion to return Spider-Man to his roots that backfired with pretty much everyone. I gave the subsequent "Brand New Day" series a spin and was not impressed. It's three times monthly now which would rock my world if it was the new Buffy, Angel, or even X-Force (ooh, violent!) comics but that is a lot of dough for a storyline I just don't care about. Why do you hate us, Marvel comics? We've been good to you! Give me back my "Cable and Deadpool" and stop delaying "Astonishing X-Men". Nobody gives a shit about this Secret Invasion nonsense, either. Skrullektra my ass!

Yeah, I had heard of the "back to his roots" idea and I have mixed feelings towards it.
One, I hate ANYTHING that just re-writes history and continuity. DC comics are a particular fan of this sort of thing, and its the main reason I stay away from their comics (Earth One and Earth Two and characters being written in and out of continuity - Supergirl has had this done to her about three times). Marvel, on the other hand, have always (to my knowledge) been pretty faithful to what has gone on before, even referencing storylines and characters from SIXTY years ago in one Avengers tale I read recently. This "SHOOM! It didn't happen!" way of thinking is a road I really don't want them to take, ESPECIALLY with Spider-Man.
However..
I really do think the character of Spidey has lost something over the last couple of years. Now, I'm still catching up on the US titles (the comic I buy is just coming up to the Civil War stories), so I can only imagine its gotten worse over time, hence their hasty re-write.
The comics I'm reading just now .. they're just not what Spidey should be about. In this comic I read, you get two "current" stories and a "classic" story every two weeks. The classic one is from the early eighties and its when Spidey first gets the black suit, before anyone had even heard of symbiotes. And its BRILLIANT. Spidey already has a rich history, but the classic story elements are all there; JJJ still hates him, he's still a photographer trying to make ends meet and he still has to keep his identity secret.
In the current stories, however (and this is before the public unmasking I've read about which takes place later), pretty much every man and his dog knows who he is. He's part of the Avengers, and spends most of his time hanging around with his mask off. The real clincher for me, though, and this was what made me think that maybe something needs to be done, is one story where Spidey goes to Latveria (Doom is "dead") to go into a time machine (for no real reason) and see his Uncle Ben (though he can't talk to him, just look at him). Well, he takes two people, clad in old Iron Man armour, and they have to fight their way past robot guards still protecting Doom's castle.
Oh yeah - those two people in Iron Man suits? M.J and AUNT MAY.
Now, when a story has progressed to a level where not only is Spider-Man, his wife and his aunt living with The Avengers, but they have the old bag kitted out in robotic hardware, I think its time for a major re-think.
So... I dunno. Part of me hates it, but part of me understands it too. I guess I'll have to hold judgement until I read it myself. Like, in 2011.

You're going to fucking hate "One More Day". But Spider-Man's storyline got really awesome during the Civil War so enjoy that. That Aunt May and MJ thing is the worst thing I've ever heard. I actually got into following Spidey comics during Civil War so I'm happy to have missed out on that atrocity. You should order trade paperbacks from Amazon or someplace rather than waiting for the monthlies. Waiting is excruciating for me.
