Should I "pimp" the site on more boards?

OK, time for a "Future of the Fortress" style talk. Serious caps on, ladies and gents.

So, as we all know, The Curmudgeon put some reviews and comments on another forum, with the idea of "poaching" some members from there to here. Now, obviously with the tone and content, a lot of people will not like the cut of my jib, as it were, so I was never expecting 1000 people overnight.

However, the results were very good, we got TWO new members (and FEMALES to boot, real live, honest to goodness women) for my troubles, and of course their input is adding a whole new dimension to the site.

So should I chance my arm again? Am I opening myself up to a potential stream of FUK U FAG LOL type posters, or it worth the risk to try and snag more like-minded people, a la Patsy and Isis?

And if so - are there any forums you know of that meet the following requirements

1) Aren't strictly moderated. I need to be able to get my point across to lure in any potential members who will think "ah.. I like where this guy is going. OK, I'm in", without being banned by some loser with a power trip.

2) Aren't overly busy. I don't think for a minute I would have got the attention I did over in that other place had there been 100 posts a day. That forum was busy, but there wasn't a lot happening so it made it perfect for some attention seeking tool (and I mean that in the nicest possible way) to go in and turn heads.

3) Are of similar content to this place. I don't want to go into a Politics Forum talking about how bad the X-Factor is.


So, let's hear YOUR opinion people. Should I try my luck in more forums to try and get some more new blood, or should we stick with what we have for now. And if I SHOULD get new members - any good suggestions for where they may be hiding?

Use your judgment, man. I'd love to see more people in here and you know I bring the napalm (and enjoy using it) if somebody comes looking for trouble. I try to stop in here once a day (twice if I'm off work) and it's always a good time if there's lots of action. Don't bust your ass or anything, but feel free to wander about and kick up the shit in The Fortress's name. It's your site after all.

Best of luck with the site Curmudgeon - it looks good and you've a great style. I mainly inhabit political discussion type boards myself - mentally I can picture the majority of members there as Simon Cowell lookalikes.

i fell in from amazon to ask a question and stayed for a looksee. not much else once you get past those so maybe that's a problem if you're not sticky enough. other boards we use have more general discussion so we kinda drop in more.

do you put reviews on imdb? yeah, you get the lol squads, but some industry peeps as well.

site looks a tad dated too. colours, font and so forth. (just giving you my thoughts)

See, that just proves I can't please anyone. You came for the reviews and thought there wasn't much else, whilst our two new-comers hate hate HATED the reviews.

I'm interested by what you mean as "general" discussion. Do you mean like "what are you doing today" kind of thing and more everyday chat rather than thread specific stuff?

Yeah, I'll accept the board probably doesn't LOOK great, but when I started it the whole idea was that it wasn't going to be anything flashy, there wasn't going to be graphics or intro's or anything like that. One - because I don't know how to do any of that stuff, and two - I tried to make the whole idea that we're here for the discussion side of things.

But maybe the site could do with a "sprucing up". Hmmmm. Thanks - I'll think it over.

i didn't say I liked the reviews but that once you got past them, there wasn't much else. for the record, i haven't read them except ghostwatch because the first couple of lines of a couple of them were enough to switch me off. does it really matter so much if you don't like stuff?

for general discussion i mean just about anything that would come up in a normal evening down your local. in here, it's more about showcasing your superior (read 'non mainstream)taste so i don't think it's going to bring in a lot of members which is why i said if your reviews aren't doing the business, you're kinda stuffed.

discussion's good, but who wants to sit in the local WI hall if there's a reasonable pub two doors down?

for now i'm just filling in time between deliveries watching you guys.
