I thought we'd use this space to discuss the worst covers of songs. EVER. Let's start with something easy: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoOJ4qkuXaQWarning: DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING WHILE VIEWING THIS. You can only imagine how fast it'll shoot out your nose as you laugh.

You know, I've been meaning to do a thread on cover versions ever since I started this site (I even have my opening "speech" stored somewhere. I stopped because I realised I had written an essay). So yes indeed - discussing worst covers is a great idea. And maybe one day we'll get round to talking about the best. For now.. hmmm. So much to choose from and things like your example, Wolfy, don't really bother me. Yes, they're awful, but they've never dented any chart or really bothered anyone. Not, like, say, this brand new "effort".. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgmL2LeuhY4or how about www.youtube.com/watch?v=frWuiaD9XYM&feature=relatedYup. This thread could run and run..

patsypending,
You do know that Roy Orbison recorded I DROVE ALL NIGHT first in 1987, don't you? It was eventually officially released in 1993, posthumously, in large part due to Cyndi's remake being so successful in 1989. In fact, the tune was written specifically for Roy. It's one of those rare cases that the remake outshines the original.

Sorry Pats, but I like the FYC and Roy Orbison versions. And although the Sugarbabes/Girls Aloud one was nothing special musically, it was waaaaaaaaay easy on the eye ;D On a similar theme, here's more eye candy sucking the life out of a classic track: www.youtube.com/watch?v=w37thYX6aYM

I've seen that before. I think it was meant to be tongue in cheek, but weirdly it works for me. Here's another one that works for me - ignore the video (please!) But I daresay the Dead Kennedys would be spinning in their graves. If they were in them, that is. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVCAG3asm7Y

Hey Wolfman, remember when AC/DC were the best badn in the world to piss those kind of people off? Mikado, that DK cover was unforgivable. You've gone too far. This is no longer fun; it's an endurance test. Take this: youtube.com/watch?v=yJB6PiLkmSs Eat your heart out, Rollins. Metallica's "Last Caress" cover was awesome. Surely they could do The Ramones justice? Surely. youtube.com/watch?v=pvajRVCHMF8 Nice drums, Lars. Or -speaking of hot girls murdering classics- try a little of this: youtube.com/watch?v=uZO69LpaSzw. Now answer me this: who's your awful cover daddy? Pop quiz hotshot: what could be worse than a rock dinosaur attempting to embrace an already dated electronica fad? Give up? Said dinosaur doing a Puff Daddy impression at the same time: youtube.com/watch?v=yErZz5p45t8

Wolfy, I didn't realise that about the Roy/Cyndi song and I realise it isn't one of the worst versions ever, but I definitely preferred the Cyndi Lauper version.
Mik, I was a big Buzzcocks fan when I was at school and I can't stand Roland Gift's voice, so when FYC released "Ever Fallen in Love" it was a double whammy for me.
