Now, I think its fair to say that most of us here have "another half" (I hate that expression, but it suits the purpose here), that is, a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife - whatever, and so we turn our attention to THEM today. Or rather, we think of those inevitable conversations we've had with them, movie fans that we are, when we discover that they haven't seen some amazing film that is pretty much in our DNA by now. Yeah, we've all been there.
So this is a thread dedicated to the TV and movie education process; not just what YOU've introduced your partner to, but what THEY've introduced to you, too. Some things, sadly, just don't hit home with both parties, so let's talk about the hits AND the misses, shows or films you adore but they just didn't rate.
I'll start with a couple..
Evil Dead Trilogy - my wife had never seen any of the Evil Dead films, and while I think she preferred the straight horror of the first film to the goony slapstick of the other two, she is now a fully fledged believer in the cult of Campbell (so much so that she named our second kitten "Ash Campbell). So a definite HIT there, then.
Starsky and Hutch - I missed this the first (and probably second and third) time around, but I used to catch repeats of this at around midnight on some crappy channel and I loved every minute. So it was an obvious essential purchase on DVD. My wife had never seen it, but I think she ended up enjoying it more than I did (although, bizarrely, she thought Starsky was better looking than Hutch!!!) So another big HIT there.
A devastating flop, however, came in the shape of Garth Marengie's Darkplace. Now, WE know that its one of the finest shows on the planet, but it just didn't tickle her funny bone. So while I'm sitting yucking it up, she's sitting waiting on the damn thing ending. Although she did like Matt Berry, so I didn't have to divorce her on the spot. Still, a major MISS. Bummer.
That's three that I introduced to her. Now she tried to get me into..
Babylon 5: Although she came close to making me hate every single person on the show after a "Babylon-athon" (her words) which was, like, almost an entire season in one day. Now, I didn't mind this show at all; yes, some of the effects were dodgy, some of the acting was below par and their best character was a wardrobe in a dress, but it was a superbly written, masterfully planned sci-fi show. HIT, then.
Stargate: There's no denying that Stargate boasted a far superior budget to Babylon 5. In fact, some of the effects were almost of movie quality, it really did look THAT good sometimes. But sadly, that was all it had going for it in my book. I just found the entire show to be a massive drag, with tedious, formulaic stories, boring characters and forced attempts at humour (why did Jack have to try and talk like he was 15?) I gave up after two seasons, not least because the idea of sitting through another eight seasons, not to mention spin-offs and movies, was grade A nightmare fuel. MISS.
But that's enough from me. What movies and TV shows have you subjected your beloved to, and what crap has she forced you to sit through?
