So, I'd imagine you American Dwellers will have heard something, somewhere about some.. vote happening. Is it a big deal over there?
Ahem. Well, when I saw on Raw today Obama asking WWE fans "Do you smell what Barack is cooking?" I can rightly imagine this must be EVERYWHERE right now. You know, over in the UK, the biggest threat against political parties is apathy - more people voted for X FACTOR than voted for the next Prime Minister.
So do you really think things will change with either Obama/McCain? Will anyone of them make any huge difference to the way the country is being run? Will some racist maniac take out Obama if he's made President?
Discuss!

I'm 19 so this was the first election I've ever taken part in. I spent the past 8 days abstaining from smoking anything, letting my tolerance get nice and low, and around 1:00pm today my friends and I lit two up and went to go vote - all for Barack Obama of course. He's the man, the most level-headed on the issues, and he's just the change we need after the disastrous and embarrassing reign of George W. Bush. Thank God.

By a landslide! Now when I say "fuck the system" I mean that shit. No voting for me, though I was tempted. But I feel elated and downright optimistic that I am facing the prospect of a Commander-in-Chief that I actually and truly respect. And a minority with an ethnic name at that. I did not know my country had it in them. My ice-cold anger is melting away at the prospect that I have been wrong to assume the majority of my countrymen are ignorant, uneducated bigots. On this night I can say "God bless America" without irony for the first time in my adult life. I believe I have your generation to thank for this, Haines. You guys rock. Being of sound mind and suffering through the lies of the 80's, the impotent oil tycoonery of Bush Sr., the deceit manipulation and blatant corruption of Clinton, all capped by eight years of the most ignorant, incompetent, and borderline retarded embarrassment ever to be unfit for the most powerful office in the world has been a painful, painful thing to suffer through. I hope this is the change in the weather it appears to be and I can someday soon be proud to be an American like I was when I was too young to know better. Now if we can just clean up Congress....

I believe I have your generation to thank for this, Haines. You guys rock. From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of all my friends, Trashy, it was our pleasure. I've been looking forward to this day for so long now, and I am absolutely ecstatic about it, not just because of the outcome but also because I had the honor and the privilege of contributing to it as a voter for the first time ever. This is a day that I'm going to remember and cherish for the rest of my life. I've done something of a write-up with my complete thoughts here: blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=60823856&blogID=446459109

And to think they call you guys apathetic. My bigot father-in-law stormed in today and declared it was "all them college kids that did it". I smiled big and replied in my best angry Homer Simpson impression "all those educated people... bettering themselves and voicing their opinions... I hate them so muuuuuch!" As pleased as I am with the presidential side, I'm sorry to report that my state narrowly passed an ignorant law defining marriage in our constitution as strictly heterosexual and stripping legally married gay couples of all such rights. Incomprehensible. So our state constitution is to be used as some sort of Wikipedia dictionary now? What happened to America the free? Doesn't freedom mean the choice to live your life as you see fit regardless of sexual preference? Hel-lo, 1st Amendment declaring that government shall not establish religion! This shit will never end until everyone currently over 70 is dead and buried or people take the time to learn about the Constitution and what the words on it mean. The former will happen first. STAY ANGRY!My cousin (technically my wife's cousin's husband) has his own internet radio site. Grooooan. See for yourself what I have to contend with here. voiceinthevalley.com/audio/voice_in_the_valley/voice110508.mp3 I hope Palin runs for prez in four as well. Guarantees 8 years of Obama! What a mental retard she turned out to be.

I missed being able to vote by less than a year, but I'm not sure I would have anyway. I kept up with the presidential race pretty well this year, but I didn't like either candidate much. McCain is a Goddamn media hound, and too annoying with all his maverick this, maverick that, maverick 2008 shit.
Obama, on the other hand, pisses me off just as much with all his change this, change that, change, change, CHANGE, C-H-A-N-G-E CHAAAAANGE shit, and frankly, I think he's promised America too much of his bullshit to be anything but a disappointment. Those on the right are already sick of him, and those on the left have such high expectations he'll never be able to live up to them all.
Basically, I thought this election was shit. The only good thing that happened was Franken losing by 700 some odd votes in the Minnesota senate race. I wish they could have shown a video of his face when they announced the final tally. It would have been priceless.

I hate to tell you this, Ben, but this is as good as it gets. I'll believe Obama's talk when he backs it up, but the fact that he's intelligent, eloquent, frank, and downright RESPECTABLE is enough to please me for now. The shit that has been spilled about Palin since the election terrifies me. McCain was seriously going to put that bitch in the White House knowing full well that she's halfway to retarded, incompetent, uneducated, and practically bipolar? Great leader, my ass! Apparently, being a maverick means having no regard for the country whatsoever.

Uh oh, Trashy. I think you're suffering from a "I just listened to Obama talk" boner. He's intelligent, and man can he give a speech, but until he does anything real I'm not hopping on the bandwagon.

Not a chance. I'm suffering from decades of observing obviously corrupt, ignorant, and downright shitty human beings that never should have made it to any office more important than assistant manager at McDonald's being elected to the most powerful office in the world by fucking hicks over and over again. To see somebody almost squeaky clean and legitimately intelligent come through the fire and take the whole thing is more inspirational than any stupid speech. I don't know how aware you've been of our political process over the last 30 years or so, but let me tell you that hardcore punk and thrash metal developed in that time because of the sheer fucking rage of intelligent people witnessing the farce that our country has become in the hands of these idiots. If Obama fucks up, I won't be surprised, but for once I will be disappointed. All the signs point up with this guy. If he turns out to be just another snakeoil peddler than we will be no worse off than we have been. But for the first time in my lifetime, there is at least a chance that things can improve. That is where I'm coming from. Fuck speeches and promises, just give me my fucking money back and stop spending it on bombs and corporate donations and I shall be thankful. There is no bandwagon for me. The Democratic Party is a party of morons, but I'll be damned if I hate on a solid citizen before he earns it.

He's intelligent, and man can he give a speech, but until he does anything real I'm not hopping on the bandwagon. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/27628719/He's only been elected for five days and he's still more than two months away from being inaugurated, but he's already planning how to hit the ground running and reverse the mess left by George W. Bush. A lot of people do have unrealistic expectations for Obama at this point. He's not going to turn America into a utopia, especially not in four years time. But the very fact that a level-headed, intelligent politician is actually stepping up with the balls and the right mindset to fix things is a fantastic sign for the future. If he even tries to make half the things he's promised into reality, that alone will be tremendous progress for our country.

People do seem to be going a little overboard on the "Obama is our Saviour" stuff in the media, and I don't know if that's a good thing. Are people already expecting too much from him?

I am not, but many are. If he restores just a bit of respectability to this country and it's highest office and give me more time to spew my venom elsewhere, that will be enough for me. I don't know what the fuck other people are expecting. There has been an increase in anti-black hate crimes. I hope the public rises up to smack these shitheads down so I don't have to find and mobilize the FSU cliques for some punk rock vigilante action. Wow, what a great idea for a movie.

It doesn't surprise me in the slightest that there's been an increase in racist attacks. The fact these moronic dinosaurs are now living their lives under the rule of someone they automatically class as inferior must stick in their throats. And I hope they fucking choke on it.

In short, I'm finally glad that we can move on to learning that we shouldn't judge a person by gender or skin tone but rather by their personality. I'm in agreement with you, The Curmudgeon!
