You may have noticed the increase in "spam" posts over the last few days.
I have no idea where they're coming from or why they seem to be multiplying. I also have no idea HOW to get rid of them, apart from making this board a "members only" site.
Needless to say, don't click on any of the links, but is there any way to, if not stop them, at least limit them? Where do they come from?

Requiring user registration in order to post here would definitely be a start. Unregistered visitors to the site could still view the forums here without logging in, and anybody could still freely register at any time, so it wouldn't be inhibiting discussion around here in any way. And really, what's the point of getting into regular discussion on a message board without registering a consistent username in the first place?
You could keep the Amazon Reviews forum as the only wherein unregistered posting is possible, so you can still keep up with your Amazon review comments on these parts. I think having that section of the board as the only easy target for spambots would be a lot easier to keep up with.
Barring that, you could always bestow moderator powers to some other users here so that the spambots can be cleaned up when you're not around. I'd volunteer my services whenever I have the free time to visit this place, which isn't that often unfortunately, but I'm sure Trashy would be up for helping out.

Well, I tell you what, this wasn´t the way I would have liked to spend my last ever post of 2008, but a random check of my emails and this place (I´m in Gran Canaria) shocked me.
Almost every fucking section of the site had been spammed, sometimes two or three times. So I decided to come in and clean up my website.
I didn´t notice your post before, Benjamin, and you provide some pretty good ideas. If the Spam problem continues (and certainly to this extent), then drastic action MUST be taken. And your ideas don´t sound so drastic anyway.
But that´s another problem for another.. well, year. If you´re reading this on 31st December, enjoy the rest of this one.

Well...it depends on what you want to do. I don't know if you can grant "admin" privileges to say Trashy, Benjamin Haines or me (since we visit here the most) but if you could then we could "police" and clean up the spam whenever it's necessary since we all visit consistently at various hours of the day. I know I do even though I don't always post right away. Oh, and I was gonna start a topic myself regarding this called "A call to arms..." but I guess I was too slow to get around to it....

How sinister did THAT sound, Paul?!
Hey, who´d have thought I´d be here again while in sunny G.C? Well, while Mrs C gets her "siesta" it appears that my inability to sleep without alchohol or pills has decided to come abroad with me. Harrumph.
Anyway, I don´t think there´s any real need for added mods, because I´m in here pretty much every day anyway (including, it would seem, while I´m on holiday).
I got thinking about this spam though. Do they target certain words, perhaps? It can´t be a coincidence, can it, that at this time of year both last years Christmas and New Years threads were spammed? So maybe they are, um, "programmed" to target key words to get the highest possible number of people looking at them.. or something? Fuck, I dunno, it just struck me as weird that both "seasonal" threads were hit.
But yeah, I may take Benjamin up on his idea of making this a members only board. Which fucking SUCKS, quite frankly, because I wanted anyone, at any time, to be able to leave messages if they wanted to.
But its not the tidying up the board that pisses me off - its the effect it has on the site itself. It someone just happened to wander in here, they would think there hasn´t been a new comment in, say, the Amazon reviews section, for about a year. And that makes the place look like shit. A small userbase we may have - a dead website we most certainly do not.
So yeah, I think that´s going to be the major change that takes place when I get back (tomorrow night, fact fans). It won´t make a bit of difference to you or me, but it will make the site less stranger-friendly. A shame, but at least we won´t get anymore $&($·"(=/&%$" threads.
