Yes, that would be Miley Cyrus.
Here's the story; when I was in Florida a year or so ago, every night Mrs Curmudgeon and I would lie in bed, exhausted after spending the entire day in the sun and walking around theme parks. So we watched TV, and two new TV shows that we'd never heard of before suddenly became THE shows to watch; namely Dog the Bounty Hunter and Hanna Montana.
Now, I thought the HM show was AWFUL. Crap acting, terrible, forced gags and the sort of shouty, hands on hips delivery usually reserved for school shows, but we continued to watch it every night anyway until Mrs C admitted, "ahh.. I love this show."
It was a few months later when the HM craze finally hit the UK, and now you can't move for bags, posters, t-shirts and DVDs of her. That being said, her music isn't really in high demand over here, so its not like she's been number one for 10 weeks and you could easily get sick of her or anything. In fact, save for a few of her videos getting played on MTV, you would really struggle to see her at all.
It's actually kinda mind boggling to see how HATED Miley Cyrus actually is. When you read the comments on Youtube about her, parent groups and the usual nut jobs that complain about everything have painted her as the Anti Christ, and for every good comment there's about 10 negative ones.
Now, I'm probably setting myself up for an online lynching, but.. deep breath.. I actually really like her.
What started off as an "ironic" thing, where Mrs C (who's an even bigger music snob than me) played a clip of her on iTunes as a joke, after a few listens on music channels it turned into.. "damn.. that's actually pretty good." And then Mrs C later confirmed what we were both too ashamed to say; "it's official - Miley Cyrus is AWESOME."
Here's the thing; I've always been a fan of good pop music; yeah its better when music is played and written by the artist themselves (and even though most of her more recent songs are "co-written" I don't believe she's had any part of that at all), but there has been, and will always be, a market for good looking kids singing for other kids. Simon Cowell and the like have flooded the market with some deeply terrible acts and one hit wonders, so to have someone like Miley Cyrus, someone that kids will remember 10 years from now, who is the obvious total popstar package, can only be a good thing.
Oh, and now it's actually legal to say it (at least in the UK, anyway), God DAMN but she's smoking hot too. I mean, seriously..
Oh. Yeah.
So, anyway - I imagine some of you may be holding your head in your hands wondering if The Curmudgeon has had a nervous breakdown or if I've maybe been bodysnatched, but no - it's still me. Like I said, pop music can be great, and Miley Cyrus has some great pop records. Oh, and did I mention she's hot?
So.. as I brace myself for the reaction.. what are YOUR thoughts on Disney's billion dollar princess?
