I dunno if it broke over where YOU are, but in the UK the media was in something of a buzz over the company Qtrax, who promised that you could download any song - from any artist at any time - for free. And it was legal and the artist got royalties.
Sounds impossible? Well, the newspapers made a pretty big deal about it, calling it the future of music blah blah. Until the very next day, when every major label corrected Qtrax by informing them they were NOT on board with this venture. So right now the Qtrax website is basically "pending." I'd give it a month before it's gone completley.
So did anyone else get sucked into this? I know I did. And for the life of me I don't know why. No money changes hands and yet the musicians stil make money? How would that EVER work?

Well, uhhhh... It wouldn't.
It's a nice idea though. Can't say I'm a big fan of downloads (the only time I ever download something is just to get a feel for it before I decide whether or not to buy it), but if it were free AND legal I don't think I'd be able to resist.

Is the site kept alive through advertising or what? I hadn't heard of this but I'm intrigued.
