Yeah, yeah, I know it happened last week (and I'm kinda surprised there's not been a thread about it here yet), but I actually caught the VMA Awards in Florida AFTER the now infamous Kanye/Swift incident, and myself and Mrs C were intrigued. I couldn't understand WHY Kanye got such a chorus of boos when his name was mentioned, and then someone made reference to "an incident". We actually went downstairs to the internet at around 1am to google MTV News to find out what had happened. Then came back upstairs to find MTV were repeating the entire show again anyway. Dang.

Anyway, this isn't the first time Kanye has acted like a spoiled, obnoxious prick at an awards show. Check him out here after losing to Justice vs Simian "We Are Your Friends" for best video.

And then in 2007, when MTV opted for Britney to open the Awards show instead of him, he suggested "maybe his skin colour wasn't right." Diiiiiiiick. And then when he lost all FIVE nominations he said he would never appear on MTV again. DIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICK!

And now the Taylor Swift thing. I would post the video for it, but trying to find it amongst the hysterical twinks posting "rants" about it is all but impossible. You'll have seen it anyway.

If you disagree with who gets an award (and for fucks sake, its an MTV Award - who CARES who wins or not?) you save that shit for blogs and tweeters. Jumping on stage for attention not only made West look like a complete douche, but he also embarrassed Beyonce in the process (the fact the Single Ladies clip actually DID win Best Video later that night, not just Best Female Video, must've made Kanye cringe a little).

So the question is; Is Kanye West the biggest asshole in music?

I saw it within 24 hours of it happening. I immediately got the feeling that it was staged, just like the whole Brüno/Eminem thing from last year. And wouldn't you know it:

You know, I said that at the time, that it was maybe staged by MTV to get people talking afterwards or maybe a joint move on Kanye/Swift's part, but .. why would an egomaniac like Kanye agree to look like such a complete fool?

Any press is good press. I'm with Wolfman on this. Every single VMA's has one big moment that everybody talks about and remembers. And they are all staged. What else happened at this one? Nothing. And how else do you explain how Beyonce has video of the year when she wasn't even the best in the female category if not just so she could look like an ebony goddess of mercy after Kanye's attention-getting outburst. I'm willing to bet that they were planning on having MJ perform and since that obviously wasn't happening, they had to utilize what MTV knows best, which is staged reality tv. West always acts like a dick so I doubt he had any opposition to being portrayed as such. Hooooo boy, do those jokes get old fast.

The thing is, at the time I said it was going to make Taylor Swift a megastar. When she came back out to finish her speech she got a standing ovation like she'd just discovered the cure for AIDS. But now all it's really done is make Kanye an even bigger star, which was probably his point all along.
