I just watched an episode of (ace) US drama "Lie To Me", in which a 22 year old guy was convicted of having under-age sex with a 16 year old girl. And the episode kinda shocked me because they treated the case and talked about the guy as if he was some kind of monster, as if he'd just banged a 10 year old.
And it really got me thinking, holy shit, if this is the case in America I must sound, with all my Miley etc chat like some kind of fucking animal.
See, the legal age of consent in the UK is 16. But over here kids as young as 14 are regularly known to be having sex (hell, it could be younger nowadays, who knows?) So it really does leave some open questions for America.
When Britney Spears started out, she was 16. And her "Hit Me Baby" video was pretty much the biggest (and indeed, best) thing ever, and it was perfectly clear that we, as hetero males, were supposed to want and desire her in her school girl outfit. Same goes for that Selina Gomez in her French Maid's outfit I showed you a few weeks ago. And even though Miley doesn't go down that road, her short skirt, long legs and boots in her new video doesn't exactly scream "innocence."
So how is this acceptable? Is a 16 year old girl really looked at as chaste and virginal as "Lie To Me" would have us believe? True, the slutty girls at the end of the episode would have us figure otherwise, but is the moral highground really there?
