First of all, a massive nod in the direction of your friend and mine, Invisible Wolfman, for, ahem, "inspiring" this new series of threads. Yeah, OK, sigh, the weekly posting of a song to be discussed is a good idea that I'm annoyed I didn't think of myself. Happy?
Here's the twist on Wolfy's idea, though. While his threads are older songs he grew up enjoying, this new weekly series concentrates on bands/songs/whatever that The Curmudgeon is digging right damn NOW.
Bit of a toss-up to decide which one to go for, so I thought I would settle for a band I saw just on Sunday. I've mentioned this band, Ash, before, celebrating their innovative A-Z series of 26 singles in one year (one every two weeks). They also play an A-Z series of gigs around the UK, all in smaller venues not normally associated with a high profile band.
The place I got tickets for could hold about 200 people (oddly enough, it sold out in minutes), and I half-suspected Ash would play a six/seven song set, a brief chance to see a fairly big band play in such a small place. Yeah, not quite - an hour and 45 minutes they played, with me and Mrs C squashed up against the railings, with the singer (Tim Wheeler) singing directly into my face the entire time.
Anyway, with that in mind, I thought we'd take a look at an Ash song from their huge back-catalogue. In the end I decided for the song Orpheus, not only because it was the first track they played live on Sunday, but because it sums up the band perfectly - hard rock with pure pop melodies and killer hooks.
So, as the title suggests, have a listen and let's hear YOUR verdict.
