The Curmudgeon has always been, and always will be, a lover of pop music. Yeah, I like rock and alternative more, but seriously GOOD pop music; inventive, fun, sexy, genuine, heartfelt, catchy, smart pop music will always have a place on my CD player and my iPod. So Britney, Katy Perry, Shakira, Lady Gaga, Rihanna - all that lot will (notice there's no males in that list - where ARE all the good male pop acts?) always be relevant to me. And I'd like to think the rest of the UK feels the same.
Hmmmm. Not quite.
The end of decade sales lists are in, and while the above mentioned acts and UK groups like Girls Aloud make dazzling pop records, the biggest sellers of the last 10 years are heartbreaking.
1. Will Young - Evergreen (First winner of Pop Idol)
2. Gareth Gates - Unchained Melody (runner up of Pop Idol)
3. Shaggy - It Wasn't Me (admittedly catchy, fun r&b song. Garbage, but easily the best so far)
4. Tony Christie - Is This the Way to Amarillo (60s song re-released for charity with a video that knuckle-draggers to this day think its hilarious to emulate - Amazon'd by me for that reason)
5. Band Aid 20 (dull, pointless update of 80s charity classic - also Amazon'd by me)
6. Hearsay - Pure and Simple (winner of Popstars tv show)
7. Shayne Ward - That's My Goal (winner of X Factor)
8. Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out of My Head (easily the best song here, and the only song that actually deserved to sell).
9. Bob the Builder (Children's TV show theme tune)
10. Atomic Kitten - Whole Again (drab pop song from long-forgotten dire girl band, also Amazon'd by me).
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Is this really the best we can do? Is it any wonder I hate the public?
