For the final week in this series, I thought I'd change the system yet again. Now, it's usually been a band or a song you guys would probably never have heard of, but this time I'm ending on something that anyone who hasn't been living on Krypton will have heard. Short story, first of all; when I was in Florida, we were at one of those water park places and floating down the lazy river in a tube. They had a Greatest Hits CD on that I loved every minute of, and I decided when I got home I was buying that album pretty much as soon as I stepped off the plane. And as luck would have it, the store I went into had the very album for the insultingly low price of £2.50 (about, what, four dollars?) That Greatest Hits album was by Billy Joel. And it is fucking SUPERB. Uptown Girl, We Didn't Start the Fire, Tell Her About It, The River of Dreams.. every one a pop masterclass. So, even though you already know Uptown Girl, I ask you to watch the video anyway. Remember that it's made in 1983, a time when music videos were still a fairly new phenomenon, so much so that certain artists were protesting against them ("we're musicians, not actors"). Yeah, it's corny now, but man it's still cool. And the song just cannot be argued with. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Jy0YmvGc6oWhat's not to love?

Nothing. Joel is among the best pop songwriters ever born. I need to pick up his hits CD sometime as well. He is one of those artists that no iPod is complete without. The vid doesn't work on this side of the pond.

YES! Thought you might be a fan, Trashy. The Hits CD really is something to get hold of, man. Not wishing to sound like Cowell or something like that, but what's striking about the album itself is how well crafted the songs are. The harmonies, the arrangments, the lyrics, the tune.. all moulded into one super commercial pop hit. Great stuff. So Uptown Girl didn't work, how about "We Didn't Start the Fire", a video where, as a (very) young Curmudgeon, I thought it was Michael Keaton singing. Yeah.. I have no idea why either. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9cci8iWv-g
