To the death!
OK, not really. As this "season", for want of a better word, of the Your Verdict series draws to a close, I thought it'd be nice to take a look back at the main (whisper it, only) verdict put upon MY music taste. Now, mutual respect zone that the Fortress is, of course there are no hard feelings or animosity here, even though some of my favourite records were torn to shreds. But let's take a look at what was listened to and whether it was a hit with our acid-tongued listener. Is it a hit, a miss or a "meh" shrug?
Week One: Ash - Orpheus
The Curmudgeon said - "hard rock with pure pop melodies and killer hooks"
Trashy said - "That is rockin'. Never goes out of style."
Verdict - HIT!
Week Two: 3OH!3 feat Kary Perry - Starstrukk
The Curmudgeon said: "the sort of fucked up nonsense I like"
Trashy said: "That whistling makes me what to punch those retards in the face. Sorry, C, but I couldn't have sat through that even if Perry was naked."
Verdict - MISS!
Week Three: 1990s - You're Supposed to Be My Friend
The Curmudgeon said: "what they lack in mainstream exposure they more than make up for in songs."
Trashy said: "Kinda Weezery. Not bad."
Verdict - MEH!
Week Four: Hockey - Song Away
The Curmudgeon said: "I first heard the last 30 seconds on a music channel and was instantly hooked."
Trashy said: "These guys are almost as nerdy as I am. Not bad at all."
Verdict- HIT!
Week Five: Ke$ha - Tik Tok
The Curmudgeon said: "It's fucking ACE."
Trashy said: "Paint-by-numbers bullshit."
Verdict - MISS!
Week Six: Wannadies - Hit
The Curmudgeon said: "Train journeys are instantly made better when listening to this."
Trashy said: "That was happening."
Verdict - HIT!
Week Seven: Little Boots - Remedy
The Curmudgeon said: "A chorus to die for and, sigh.. isn't she purty?"
Trashy said: "I don't like the music, but at least she earned her success so I can't bash her on that."
Verdict: MISS!
Week Eight: Mates of State - Fraud in the 80s
The Curmudgeon said: "Love them."
Trashy said: "that was some damn good stuff."
Verdict - HIT!
Week Nine: The New Pornographers - Use It
The Curmudgeon said: "they do smart, melodic guitar based pop better than most."
Trashy said: "musically decent"
Verdict - MEH!
Week Ten: Marilyn Manson - We're From America
The Curmudgeon said: "easily the best song on the album"
Trashy said: "that song is pretty badass."
Verdict - HIT!
Week Eleven: Florence and the Machine - Kiss With a Fist
The Curmudgeon said: "the song that got me interested in them."
Trashy said: "Not bad, but I could live without."
Verdict - MEH!
Week Twelve: Billy Joel - Uptown Girl
The Curmudgeon said: "the song just cannot be argued with."
Trashy said: "Joel is among the best pop songwriters ever born."
Verdict - HIT!
Total scores:
Hits - 6/12
Misses - 3/12
Meh's - 3/12
All in all, then, for two people with such obvious different tastes in music, a pretty good result, with only 3 songs (two of which feature 3OH!3 funnily enough) getting the big ol' thumbs down.
